Where had things gone wrong? When had Alena started to run the show?

Raven picked up the braided handle with its multiple interlocked loops of pliable rubber. Deceptively silent, the little implement packed more pain into a single stroke than an entire session with the flogger. One well-placed stroke would bring Alena to tears. An entire whipping would reduce her to a blubbering, helpless mess.
Raven set the loopy johnny down, and she opened her arms.
“Come,” she said, and with a disbelieving gasp the younger girl hurled herself into her mistress’s arms. “Come, my girl.”
Sobbing, Alena hugged Raven as if she would never let go. “Please don’t get angry,” she blurted. “I wish I could do what you want, but I can’t.”
Stricken, Raven brushed back Alena’s sweat-streaked hair and kissed her forehead. “It’s all confusing, isn’t it?”
Alena rubbed her punished bottom furiously, crying openly. “Spank me,” she implored. “Then I’ll know you forgive me.”
Raven shook her head, stabs of pain shooting through her heart. How could she have emphasized all that was least important? “No,” she said, catching Alena’s hands and kissing them. “You’re always forgiven. I chose you, didn’t I?”
Alena sniffled, keeping her eyes cast downward. “You can always un-choose me.”
Raven gathered the girl into an embrace, kissing her cheek. “Never. You wanted real discipline, didn’t you? This is what it looks like.”
Alena grimaced. “I didn’t think it would hurt this much. Or that it would mean ridiculous bed…” She broke off, guilt flickering over her face.
“Bedtimes? Don’t you think getting sent to bed when you’re exhausted is one of the least scary things a domme could do to you?”
Alena gave an embarrassed shrug. “I’m an adult.”
“And you don’t want a mother, right? This isn’t ageplay.” Raven stroked Alena’s cheek. “Ask yourself this. When I make you do something you don’t want but need, how do you feel?”
Alena looked away, at least until Raven took hold of her chin. “Mad.”
“And afterward?”
Alena sighed. “Maybe not as mad.”
Raven kissed her again, laughing. “Hard to admit, isn’t it? Now, ask yourself another question. This is a business arrangement. You’re free to give notice and walk away. Is that what you wish to do? Or does this relationship benefit you in more ways than finances?”
Slowly, Alena lifted her head without prompting. She spoke in a low, determined voice. “Never.”
Raven’s heart sank. She let go of Alena’s hand and leaned back in her chair. Years of Mother’s training enabled her to keep her voice level. “Then I release you from your obligations.”
“No.” Alena came forward, this time laying her head in Raven’s lap. “I’ll never walk away, not as long as you want me.”
This time, when Raven lifted Alena’s face, the tears in the younger woman’s eyes mirrored her own.
Epilogue
Lorelei: When’s the happy wedding?
A1star: Haha, don’t be silly! We’ve barely had a few dates.
Lorelei: Time to move in with each other, then.
A1star: Or get a cat, I suppose.
Lorelei: starrygirl and I are thrilled for you.
A1star: Thank you so much for the invitation.
Lorelei: Glad you two were able to work things out. But…
A1star: Oh, no. What?
Lorelei: Well, before you worked things out, I made you a promise.
A1star: Did you? What was that?
Lorelei: To invite you down to Florida.
A1star: Oh, right. That was so sweet of you.
Lorelei: Well, starrygirl’s quite put out that you won’t be coming after all.
A1star: Really? But I’ve found Raven.
Lorelei: You have, but we’d still love to host you. The B&B is for guests, after all. You’d have your own house while you were here.
A1star: I wish I could come, but you know my weekends are with Raven now.
Lorelei: Yes, dear. The invitation is for both of you.
A1star: Wait, what? Seriously? That would be great!
Lorelei: I believe starry’s stashed at least half of my paddle and wooden spoon collection there, too. She keeps hoping I won’t notice they’ve gone missing at our house.
A1star: Uh, maybe we can’t come after all. Flights are too expensive.
Lorelei: Ask Raven.
A1star: Wouldn’t want to bother her.
Lorelei: I’m sure she’d love a trip down to the warmth and sunshine. After all, what are sugar mamas for?
A Letter from Ana
Raven’s Girl began with a simple, delicious question: What if a secretly naughty author found a sugar mama? What if that sugar mama supported this author and led her into the world of kink?
As I wrote the world of Raven and how she introduced Alena to dominance and submission, I found another question equally intriguing. What if this sugar mama lost her head? In my first books about domestic discipline, The Way Home and Lighting the Way, I asked what dominance and submission look like in the real world. That is, what happens when shimmering tropes of fictional perfection give way to the gritty give and take of hard relationship negotiation? In Raven’s Girl, I wanted to explore a competent, professional, and dominant woman who forgets all of the rules as soon as she has a submissive of her own.
Raven makes rookie mistakes, and Alena makes even more. Their story is over before it’s properly begun, and yet I found joy in writing their journey. After the hardcore, soul-searching angst of Mistress’s Release and its two previous Mistress books, I loved watching two characters love each other, get it wrong, and still manage to get on with their lives.
Angst and emotion are hallmarks of Ana Vitsky books, but in Raven’s Girl I hope you enjoyed a bit of escapist fun. I tried to write a light, fluffy beach read. I really tried.
