Prologue
Olivia
I suck in a breath full of cold air. My muscles tightening up as I jump over a tree, that fell over during a storm. I strain my ears as I try to listen for the rogue that escaped from the cage under the Texan Council chambers. I know all supernatural creatures have their own councils but the shifter council needs a complete overhaul. They sit around not doing a damn thing. Rogues have been plaguing packs all over the world, still nothing. That’s why I get paid the big bucks though. When the problem gets serious enough, they call me. I only take on jobs no one else can handle. Which is also why the council leaves us alone. I have a pack of over two hundred people that depend on me and on my skill.
I run until I can smell the body odor of the rogue that attacked one of my enforcers. They nearly killed her but thank god for witches and healing potions. I mean... we have shifter healing that works pretty fast, but she would have bled to death if the witches didn’t patch her. I hear a snap from my right and I don’t hesitate to run directly towards the sound. I jump over a large patch of thorns and land in a clearing. My body crouches down into a defensive position as I hear a deep growl. I look around slowly and stop as I see a large, muddy, brown wolf, just standing there. His head is lowered as he growls louder at me. I narrow my eyes and growl loudly in return. He slowly takes a step closer to me. I don’t wait. I shift into my wolf, letting the power from within take over my entire body. I growl as I stand up taller than him. My wolf is also bigger than his. He stops for a second as he looks at me.
I can see the fear and uncertainty enter into his eyes, even from here. I snarl at him, letting him know, this won’t end well. I see his paw draw back as he thinks of running again. I chuff out, thinking it’s funny. He wasn’t scared of me until he saw my massive wolf. When he stops all of the sudden, I don’t get surprised when four other wolves step out from behind him.
I chuff out a laugh. It’s kind of sweet really. But if this is the way they want it to play out. Then so be it. They take a step forward and I snarl loudly. My dominance rolling off of me in waves aimed right for them. The four new guys stop and stare at me, cocking their heads to the side, like they are trying to figure out a math equation.
All of a sudden they all turn and run further into the woods. I mind link my best bitch Sophie.
“Bring me my weapons and a change of clothes. The gps will lead you to where my other shit is. I think they are about to lead me to the rogue pack.” I say as I run off, knowing she will get it handled.
“Miranda is on her way. She will be right behind you in about two minutes. You know that bitch runs fast.” She says with a laugh. Sophie is my second in command while Miranda is my third. We have the best kill ratio in our pack when it comes to this.
I run for a good thirty minutes before stopping as a loud chorus of growls and snarls, catch my ears. I wait for Miranda to catch up to me, which isn’t long. She really was right behind me the whole time. She comes up on my right side with a huge duffle bag in her mouth and we listen to the loud fuckers.
“So, how are we going to play this?” Miranda asks me intently.
“We are going in as our human selves. Then we are going to have a nice little chat with the ‘Alpha’.” I say before shifting into my completely naked self. She follows my lead. We dress quickly and silently. When I am dressed I grab my katana, slowly sliding it out of its sheath. I walk straight into the lion's’ den. I bite my lip to keep from laughing at my own joke.
I know it makes me seem heartless, that I can joke right before I go in to kill everyone here. But this is my job. These rogues are guilty of rape, murder, extortion and a quite a lot more. Any children here though will be taken to the council, so they can find homes for them all. Miranda is standing to my right still and grabs her own katana. We try not to use guns. That way we don’t warn anyone we are here.
We slowly walk up to the border of their so called territory and step across. I feel a nice electric wave pulse over my skin, meaning they have a dark witch, giving them wards. I just shake the tingly sensation off and continue to walk further into their territory. The growls get louder as they start coming closer to us. Miranda doesn’t say anything as she sees the wolves closing in on all sides. They form a tight circle around the both of us and howl up into the night sky. I cock my head to the side as I hear an answering howl from directly in front of us. The circle separates enough for two wolves to step inside the circle. The muddy, brown one from earlier and a regular, dark grey wolf. They snarl together and I roll my eyes. I let the dominance roll off my body. The whole pack stops to look at me.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone. The alpha is in direct conflict with the laws and regulations with the council. He is the only one that needs to come with me.” I say loud enough for the ones in the back to hear. A few wolves step back, trying to leave this motley crew behind. One vicious growl stops them mid step. I just shake my head softly. One of the bigger members steps forward, snapping at my feet. I smile as I jam the tip of my katana into his skull. I pull it out and his blood sprays all over my feet.
I crinkle my nose as his blood lands all on my new pair of leather pants. My eyes narrow while I snap my teeth at the alpha. He wastes no time as sudden pandemonium breaks out all around us. The alpha and his second jump, trying to get to us and I smirk maniacally. I swing my sword around and slice into the muddy, brown one, taking his head off in one swing. The alpha mind links his pack and they all begin attacking at once. I don’t stop as I hack and stab mindlessly.
Only a couple hang back, not attacking us at all. They will be allowed to live as long as they turn themselves in to the council. I finally turn and face the alpha and he growls. He looks from side to side, seeing most of his pack dead or not joining in. He snorts as he shifts into his human form. I’m kind of surprised. Shifters have the best metabolism, leaving our bodies in peak physical condition. He isn’t remotely good looking. He actually has no hair and a pot belly forming…. Not to mention he is short as hell. Maybe five foot four. I really wasn’t expecting that. But his eyes hold pure evil in their depths. You can almost see it swirling around.
“My goodness you are like a killing machine. Look at all of my pretty wolves. Almost every last one of them…. Destroyed.” He says with a sigh of appreciation. I quirk my eyebrow as I look at him more intently. I see the black lines around his mouth and around his eyes. Fuck me running…. He is possessed with a violence demon by the looks of it. Which would explain this callus creature before me. I just shake my head before answering him.
“Well demon, today is your lucky day. You now have a one way ticket to hell. Where you belong. I have heard how many people you have killed or maimed. The council has sent me here to dispatch you and I refuse to leave until I do so.” I say in almost
a bored kind of voice. Even though I am kind of freaked out, on the inside. A fucking demon?!
“Then shift female alpha. Let’s finish this like wolves.” He says shifting back into his wolf. I shrug and strip out of my weapons and clothes. I shift into my massive black wolf. He just watches me with a lust filled gaze. I shutter slightly and try not to get completely creeped out. We begin circling each other, looking for a weak spot. He lunges first and I snap at his front paws. He swiftly moves out of the way of my deadly teeth and backs up. He circles me again, trying like hell, to find somewhere to bite against. I rush him and see the surprise in his eyes as I bite into his shoulder. My claws raking over his sides as I snarl into his fur. He bucks trying to dislodge me from his body. When he bucks again, I see his neck open and I take my chance. I latch my teeth on his neck and I feel his bones grinding together slightly. I growl one last time as I shake my head hard, snapping his neck in the process. I back away from him and see a weird black smoke burning before completely disappearing. I shake my head and I shift back to human. I look for Miranda and see her already talking to the ones that decided not to fight. She is jotting down information and looks at me with a grin.
“Alpha Shade, come see. They have about ten pups they want us to take home. These others don’t want to go but said they would at least move to a human town.” She says excitedly. I nod as I follow her deeper into the woods. I stop as I hear little yips and cute little snarls. My heart melts instantly and I slowly make my way to their little den. They sit under a tree playing and nipping at each other’s ears. One of them is shifted into its human form and snuggles up into one of the little black wolves. I smile brightly. I know we can live forever and can have numerous pups, but I love watching pups play together. Finally, when I get enough of the cuteness, I stand and walk over to the pups. They instantly stop playing and look at me with their wide eyes.
“I know you don’t know me but it is time to go. Would you like to go home with us or to the council?” I ask softly, knowing most of them can’t understand me but I see a few that can. Their eyes full of tears as they answer for the group.
“We will go with you Alpha.” A pretty little redheaded girl says, standing up to bow to me.
“Then follow me.” I turn to Miranda and blush at her massive grin.
“Come on, let’s go home.” I say softly with the kids following behind me.
Chapter One
Olivia
Most people tell me that I have an attitude problem. (Actually kind of true) But they don’t realize how hard it is to be responsible for so many people. The pack always comes first. I do mean always. I never get to go out on a date or just watch a movie at the theater. I’m sitting here playing my guitar with the windows open trying to catch just a few minutes alone. I can almost feel the wind changing, bringing something new into my life. I raise my nose to the air and sniff softly. It smells like leather and some weird mix of aftershaves. My wolf wakes up trying to find the source, scratching at my insides, trying to get out. She is practically giddy with anticipation.
My ears perk up as I hear a branch snap about fifty yards away. I turn on my security cameras, my fingers still plucking at my guitar. I see five bodies walk into frame. That’s one thing I love about being alpha, I got some wicked powers. It’s been four years since I first shifted and my parents gave control of the pack to me. I am only twenty two. I love it really, even when my different teams are gone for such a long period of time. We call ourselves Rogue State, don’t know why though, except that we kill rogues. Our actual name is the Shade Pack. I think my dad was going through a hippy phase when he named this place. We get called whenever someone needs help dealing with rogue wolves. I have been everywhere from Ireland to Moscow. My favorite was Bali though, but enough about me for now.
I watch on my security cameras as my enforcers, stealthily, move towards the intruders. My lips twitching as I try to hold in the cackle of excited laughter trying to break free as I watch my enforcers tackle the new people to the ground. I swear sometimes I think I’m losing my mind. I braid my hair quickly as I turn away from the monitor. They will be here momentarily and I don’t want my pack to see how messy my house is. Even though the one person allowed in my personal space, while it’s dirty, has probably opened her big mouth. I love her anyway. I glance around at all of my weapons in random piles and my clothes at least washed and folded, but not put away. I leave my guitar by my big plush recliner. Fuck it, I can blame it on being busy. I step outside just as my enforcers bring the intruders to my front porch.
“Did y’all bring me something interesting or….” I stop talking as I see this huge man just watching me with his head cocked to the side, his four companions looking at him for direction. I narrow my eyes slightly as I take a nice hard look at him. His hair is buzzed short and black as night. His eyes green until I see them flash blue as he looks at me. God he is tall, probably about 6’6 and muscles to die for. He is wearing red cargo shorts and some flimsy grey t-shirt, no shoes. You can watch his chest puff up with a smug satisfaction as he catches me checking him out. Dick.
“Who are you?” I snap out as my brain finally unclogs of the weird hormone induced frenzy. My nails slightly biting into my palms as I try hard not to growl. I really need to get the healer or someone to check on me. Yay, going crazy rocks!
“My name is Alpha Snow. I heard you were the one to talk to about rogue problems. Even though I don’t need help…that much.” He says snarkily, looking up at me. A blush playing across his face because we both know he is lying. I watch as his hands come up and brush over his hair in frustration. I grin slightly and turn to go inside and wave them all to follow. This is going to be interesting.
“My name is Olivia but while you are here you can call me Alpha Shade. You can stay the night and tell me what exactly you need. Be forewarned, I’m slightly crazy and probably won’t kill you….key word is probably.” I say trying for nonchalant but failing miserably as my stomach growls. I roll my eyes because my body acts like I starve it. But I eat more than any of my pack mates. Probably the Alpha powers using up more calories than normal people. I maybe 5’6 but anyone I have ever worked with will vouch that I am more powerful than other shifters. It could be because of lineage or some such shit as that. Who knows?
My parents are both alphas and love each other dearly. Luckily they live down in Florida on the beach front property. I love it down there. I have no clue how they live together without someone dying. I bet knowing Death himself helps a lot on that front. They argue during mom's time of the month. Other than that, they usually try to get along. You would get sick with how sweet they are towards each other. So far I have four older brothers and four younger sisters. None of us get along because we are all alphas with extremely dominant personalities. Three of my sisters live with my parents, they are still only 18, and the other is an alpha in Wyoming. She is the closest to me since we are in Shade Valley, Colorado. My brothers live in Montana but they do try to visit randomly. We try to be a family but drama is always around the corner. Usually from our jobs but family feuds still happen.
I head inside acting like the bad bitch I am, totally forgetting I am only wearing an ace bandage around my boobs and low riding sweats. I have no shame when it comes to my body. I know what I am working with. My boobs are a solid C-cup while staying perky without a bra. My abs are well defined and my ass is spectacular. I even have that V that leads down to my lady garden. While my hair has a mind of its own. I don’t know what to do with it half the time, so I shove it in a braid. My nose is adorable from what people tell me. My eyes are gold in wolf form or in human form. They look like molten gold when I am really pissed. I know I sound cocky but I can’t help it. Like I said I know what I have. I have to go over to Sophie’s house later, I think as I look around my living room. She promised to have my weapon cabinets done by the time I got home. She is awesome like that. She either builds it herself or orders it from my favorite store, Wingz Inc.

p; I watch as my team leads all five of them into my living room full of chaos. I shrug sheepishly at my enforcers as they look around at the weapons, hiding grins as they walk back outside. Except the two standing outside of the door. I sit down in front of all of them and just stare, waiting for someone to start talking. My eyes linger on Alpha Snow because he is so big. His muscles bulging out against his shirt as he sits down.
My eyes roam over the other four, who are just as tall and wide, as the alpha. Well except for one. He is more lean but still very well toned. They are so built, I think I might be drooling. They seem to just sit around my living room, without trying to stare at all the weapons I have piled up, some still dripping blood on my pretty hardwood floors. Give me a break though. I only got home like two hours ago from my last case in Texas. I’ve only had enough time to eat and shower. I’m also only running on three hours sleep in a three day period. Which really throws me for a loop when trying to handle serious situations, like now.
“So is anyone going to tell me why you need the Shade pack or do I have to guess?” I ask gruffly trying not to stare at all of them. My brain is going into overload as I stare at them. My hands picking up one of the weapons, cleaning it as I wait.
“Yes, first can I introduce everyone?” Snow asks as he goes from left to right. There is himself, Brandon his second. Then Morgan, Chase (the lean one) and finally Zeldin. They are all huge, well over six feet tall and looking like they live in the gym. Brandon has bright red hair while Zeldin has blue hair spiked up in different directions. Morgan and Chase have their haircut so close to their scalp, that you can’t tell what color it is so far away. Most of them have tattoos and piercings. He closes his mouth not continuing to speak.
