“I guess you deserve a little fun time,” Katz said, eyeing her up and down. She’d changed out of her usual dark jeans and boots and into a fun red cocktail dress just to put herself in the mood of Vegas. When she felt Katz’s eyes on her, she smiled to herself. “Can I place the next bet?”
She turned her head and breathed in a little, realizing how close he was, his dark eyes glued to her, glimmering and bright. “Go ahead,” she whispered.
Katz smirked and shoved all of her chips to black 27 and Delilah yelped in protest. “What are you doing?”
“I have a good feeling,” Katz said, shrugging. He kept his eyes on her, not looking at the table and reached down to take her drink, sipping it as she felt herself blush.
“You sure about that?” The dealer asked.
Delilah blinked and looked at the dealer, nodding. “Yeah, sure. I trust him. Let it ride.”
Everyone at the table seemed to be laughing at them. The dealer spun the wheel and she felt the heat of Katz breath as he pressed against her, both of them watching the little ball roll along the red and black numbers now until it finally stopped on…
“Black twenty-seven!” The dealer said. The table burst into applause and Katz grinned as Delilah’s mouth hung open and a rack of chips was shoved back in her direction.
“Katz!” She screamed and hugged him and kissed him on the cheek before pulling away, feeling herself flush. But he didn’t seem to mind, only ducking his head and laughing. “How did you know?”
“I just knew. It’s an angel thing.” He wrapped an arm around her and she settled into it, biting her lip and too distracted by his closeness to think about the next bet. “We can hang around a while and have some fun. You’ve earned it with this crazy mission. Took some risks but sometimes you have to place a risky bet for the big prize. So congrats.”
“Thanks, Katz. Feels kinda nice to have helped make a family.” She ducked her head, feeling pleasantly squishy inside. A baby had been born. It had been so sweet to have helped that happen, and she was still surprised at herself for caring about such things. “But don’t tell anyone I said that.”
“Your secret is safe with me,” Katz whispered in her ear.
