She handed it to Lila; it had been addressed to FRESH START.
Lila turned it over and saw a heart drawn where the flap met the envelope—the same spot where kids sometimes left a mark to indicate “sealed with a kiss.” She pulled out a single sheet of paper, and read the letter aloud:
I never thought anyone cared about me other than my parents, and that whatever attention I received from others was because of my looks. I came to believe that I was only worth what I could earn off of them, and quickly found that they brought me more in a week than my parents earned with all their hard work in a season. I thought I’d found the easy way to a better life. But I was wrong, and I was trapped in a life I could not escape. I never thought I’d have a second chance. But now I have. Thanks to you. I shall not let you down. Or my parents.

Lila set the letter down on her lap, tears welling up in her eyes. “You’re right, Toni. One out of three ain’t bad.”
