by Rachel Taylor

She felt his love flowing into her, filling her, and spilling over in waves that flooded the room around them, drowning out everything else. When he finally let go, CeCe opened her eyes.

A gasp burst from her lips as two bright blue circles appeared before her, and CeCe pulled back, gripping Rafe’s arms for support. She blinked several times, and the circles came into focus, cerulean irises framed with brown lashes. Her eyes roamed his face, taking in the other features, and Rafe’s pupils widened as he realized she could see him.

  “CeCe?” he whispered.

  “Rafe? Did you… heal me?”

“No, CeCe! I’d never do that without your permission. Can you see?”

CeCe swiveled her head slowly around the room, taking it all in. The sanctuary was filled with people in summery colors and soft florals, looking like a field of wildflowers in full bloom. Bouquets of pink roses and streamers of tulle festooned the aisles, and tall, tapered candles sparkled in silver candelabras on either side of the stage. The flickering light fascinated CeCe for a moment, dazzling her. She didn’t recognize most of what she saw, but it was beautiful.

Beside her stood a woman with dark hair in a pink sheath, holding two bouquets, and next to her, a tiny little girl with a basket of rose petals. CeCe gasped as she realized who they were — her sister and her new daughter. The memories she had of her sister’s face from their childhood morphed into the adult version standing next to her, and CeCe recognized her immediately. She marveled for a moment at how Jessie had grown into such a beautiful woman — she looked like their mother had, and CeCe wondered if her own face held any semblance.

Her eyes dropped to the child she’d never seen who stared back at her, a curious look on her adorable face, and while the visage was new to her, it was also instantly familiar. The shiny, auburn locks hanging over the bodice of her ruffled pink dress were the same ones she had smoothed so many times before, and the upturned nose and bright, chestnut eyes looked exactly how she’d imagined they would. CeCe’s heart melted all over again at the perfection of her new family.

She turned back to look at Rafe, noticing his sharp, black tuxedo and rose boutonniere. His face was frozen in a stunned smile, and CeCe slowly reached up to caress the lines she knew by heart, overwhelmed.

“Disappointed?” he asked when she was silent for several moments.

She shook her head forcefully. “You’re the most handsome man I’ve ever seen, Rafe.”

“You haven’t seen that many guys yet.” Rafe chuckled.

CeCe clutched his lapels, her voice serious. “Rafe, if you didn’t heal me, why can I see?”

He shrugged. “Best I can guess is, your mind decided it didn’t need to block out the world anymore. There was never anything wrong with your eyes, you just had a broken heart.”

CeCe smiled. “So you did heal me, then. You healed my heart.” And she leaned in and kissed him till the world disappeared again.

  The End.
