And then there was his hand; the man was gripping his silver pistol so tightly that his knuckles had started to turn white.
It was clear that the thug was terrified, but it was also clear that he was not afraid to kill. And kill he would, Ken knew it.
He could see it in the man’s eyes, his face, his posture.
Ken had no choice. There were five other scientists out there somewhere.
He raised the hand holding the gun in the air and then started to slip the shoulder strap off.
“Calma,” he said, using one of the few Spanish words he knew. “Calma. We don't care what you’re doing here. We’re only taking a survey; we mean no harm.”
He didn't know if the man understood them, but when he glanced down at his three fallen comrades, the creases around his eyes deepened.
At that moment, Ken realized he’d made a mistake. This man wasn't scared; he was excited.
Knowing that he might have to sacrifice this one scientist in order to save the others, Ken quickly lowered his gun again.
“Gun up! Gun up! Gun—”
The man cringed as someone else rushed out of the jungle.
