In the ‘90s, there was a bit of a craze for rock acts to perform intimate, stripped-back, acoustic concerts, a format that suited Paul more than most. Taped on 25-01-91 he took the opportunity to dig out songs from throughout his career, including one of the first songs he ever wrote, ‘I Lost My Little Girl’, and a couple of songs from ‘McCartney’. Also performed, but not broadcast were ‘Mean Woman Blues’, ‘Matchbox’, ‘The Midnight Special, ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’, ‘The Fool’, ‘Things We Said Today’, ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, with the complete uncut show circulating unofficially. The soundtrack was issued as the album ‘Unplugged (The Official Bootleg)’, a No. 7 UK and No. 14 USA hit, while ‘I Lost My Little Girl’, ‘Every Night’, ‘And I Love Her’ and ‘That Would Be Something’ are all on ‘The McCartney Years’.
28-06-91 – ‘Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio’, The Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool (UK)
I War / II School / III Crypt / IV Father / V Wedding / VI Work / VII Crises / VIII Peace
Paul’s first, of several, dabbles with classical music, ‘Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio’ didn’t chart in the UK, and peaked at just No. 177 in the USA.
07-06-91 – Cornwall Coliseum, St. Austell (UK)
We Can Work It Out
To promote the ‘Unplugged (The Official Bootleg)’ album, Paul and band did a series of 6 ‘secret’ shows in the UK (3 shows), Spain, Italy and Denmark. There was supposed to also be a gig in France, but this was cancelled due to the death of Linda’s father.

Hope Of Deliverance
Taped at night in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, on 24-11-92 (with additional filming in London’s Black Island Studios on 26-11-92) and available in 2 differing edits, the video for this No. 18 UK and No. 83 USA hit is on ‘The McCartney Years’. The album it is from, ‘Off The Ground’, is full of tour-friendly songs, and got to No. 5 in the UK and No. 17 in the USA.

Deliverance
A manic, almost instrumental, remix of ‘Hope Of Deliverance’, the frantic and fast-moving video doesn’t feature Paul.

This was taped in The Mean Fiddler, London, on 20-11-92.

Also performed on 10-12-93 but not broadcast were ‘I Owe It All To You’, ‘Big Boys Bickering’, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘Peace In The Neighbourhood’, ‘C Moon’, ‘C’mon People’, and ‘Live and Let Die’. The complete uncut 10-12-92 show circulates unofficially. Shortly after this, Paul would begin ‘The New World Tour’, which lasted from 18-02-93 to 16-12-93, and featured shows in Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Austria, the UK, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

C’mon People
Taped on 16/18-11-92, the video for this No. 41 UK hit cleverly features everyone else speeded up, while Paul performs the song at normal speed on piano, and is on ‘The McCartney Years’.

Get Out Of My Way
This was taped on 12-01-93, and is a straight performance video.
00-04-93 – Promo Video #1
Biker Like An Icon
Confusingly, there are at least 4, quite different, videos for this excellent song. Version #1 features a storyline of a girl running away to join her biker boyfriend, and features no actual footage of Paul. This is the one selected for ‘The McCartney Years’.
00-04-93 – Promo Video #2
Biker Like An Icon
Version #2 is (mostly) a straight studio mimed performance, and was taped on 12-01-93, at the same session as the ‘Get Out Of My Way’ video.
00-04-93 – Promo Video #3
Biker Like An Icon
Version #3 features the storyline video, but with Paul’s performance from 12-01-93 super-imposed on the right of the screen (even more confusingly, this particular video is available with both the studio recording as a soundtrack, and with the ‘Paul Is Live’ concert audio).
00-04-93 – Promo Video #4
Biker Like An Icon
Version #4 has a 3-way split screen, with the girl running away storyline in the middle, Paul on the right, and other band members on the left.
00-04-93 – Promo Video
Off The Ground
Taped in early December 1992, amusingly, this features Paul literally ‘off the ground’, flying through the air, while Linda and the rest of the band look out of a window at him, eventually all coming off the ground too. The video is on ‘The McCartney Years’.
16-04-93 – The Earth Day Concert, The Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood (USA)
Hope Of Deliverance [with k.d. lang] / Hey Jude (incomplete) [includes Ringo Starr]
A special concert to enhance environmental awareness, with a couple of rather special guests.
27-04-93 – Backstage, The Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis (USA)
My Old Friend / Maybelline / Lend Me Your Comb / Matchbox / Blue Suede Shoes / The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise [all songs are with Carl Perkins]
Prior to his Memphis concert, Paul took the time to jam and reminisce with Carl Perkins, a performer that every one of The Beatles loved.

All My Loving / Mull Of Kintyre
02-06-93 – Milwaukee County Stadium, Milwaukee (USA)

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band / Band On The Run / I Saw Her Standing There / Hey Jude
This was broadcast live on US TV, though several songs weren’t shown due to commercial breaks. It was later broadcast, in more complete form, in the UK on 13-11-93.

Matchbox / No Other Baby / Good Rockin' Tonight / Be Bop A Lula / The Midnight Special / Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying / Ain't That A Shame / Get Out Of My Way / Linda Lou / Twenty Flight Rock
The biggest surprise of this sound-check is ‘No Other Baby’, a song Paul was to issue as a single 6 years later.
15-11-93 – The Dome, Tokyo (Japan)
Drive My Car / Coming Up / All My Loving / Let Me Roll It / Off The Ground / Can't Buy Me Love / Good Rockin' Tonight / We Can Work It Out / Hope Of Deliverance / Biker Like An Icon / Yesterday / Lady Madonna / Magical Mystery Tour / Let It Be / Live and Let Die / Paperback Writer / Back In The U.S.S.R. / Sgt. Released in March 1994, a highlight is ‘Kansas City’, performed as a one-off in the place of the same name on 31-05-93 (The Beatles did exactly the same thing when they played in Kansas City 29 years earlier!). The album from this tour, ‘Paul Is Live’, got to a disappointing No. 34 in the UK and No. 78 in the USA.

Drive My Car [with Ringo Starr]
Standing for ‘Recording Artists Against Drink-Driving’, this awareness video includes Ringo Starr, Julian Lennon, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Phil Collins and many others, and was first broadcast on ‘The American Music Awards’ on 07-02-94.
23-06-94 – Friar Park, Henley-on-Thames (UK) – THE THREETLES
Raunchy / Thinking Of Linking / Blue Moon Of Kentucky / I Will / Dehra Dun / Ain’t She Sweet [with George Harrison and Ringo Starr]
For the 1995 ‘Anthology’ project, Paul, George and Ringo got together at George’s home (both indoors and out in the garden) to jam on a few numbers. Not all of the day’s filming has been released, but what little has been seen is magical indeed.
16-10-95 – The Royal Albert Hall, London (UK)
Ballad Of The Skeletons [with Allen Ginsburg]
Paul played guitar on this performance, just as he did on the studio version.

Come Together
Taped in Abbey Road Studios, London, on 04-09-95, this No. 19 charity record for ‘War Child’ features a one-off super-group that also includes Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher and Steve Craddock.
00-10-96 – Promo Video – ALLEN GINSBURG
Ballad Of The Skeletons
Although Paul doesn’t appear in the actual video, he does play several instruments on the song.
00-04-97 – Promo Video #1
Young Boy
Paul deliberately avoided any major solo releases during The Beatles ‘Anthology’ period, so 1997’s ‘Flaming Pie’ was his first album in 4 years. ‘Young Boy’, the first single from the album in the UK, peaked at No. 19, but the album did far better, just missing the top of the charts at No. 2 in both the UK and USA. This first video sees Paul recording the song and driving around outside.
00-04-97 – Promo Video #2
Young Boy
This 2nd video features Paul performing the song while playing acoustic guitar, superimposed over footage of a surfer.
00-05-97 – Promo Video #1
The World Tonight
A No. 23 UK hit and No. 64 US hit, this 1st video features Paul walking around at night with a ghetto blaster on his shoulder.
00-05-97 – Promo Video #2
The World Tonight
Version #2 features Paul with a huge yellow umbrella.
00-05-97 – Promo Video #3
The World Tonight
Version #3 features scenes from the movie ‘Father’s Day’, starring Billy Crystal and Robin Williams, along with footage from the other Paul videos plus outtakes.
16-05-97 – ‘In The World Tonight’ (UK)
Somedays / Flaming Pie / The World Tonight / Heaven On Sunday / Little Willow / Young Boy / The World Tonight / Calico Skies / Great Day / Beautiful Night
This documentary on the making of the ‘Flaming Pie’ album includes footage of Paul performing/recording some of the songs, which are generally different from the various promo videos. A highlight is a lengthy sequence featuring Ringo drumming and singing with Paul on ‘Beautiful Night’, complete with George Martin assisting and Linda singing, poignantly, knowing what wasn’t far away, looking healthy and happy. This was broadcast in the USA by VH-1 on 16-05-97 and in the UK 2 days later. When it was later issued on VHS (and eventually on DVD), ‘Bishopsgate’ was added, see the entry below.
17-05-97 – ‘Paul McCartney’s Town Hall Meeting’, Bishopsgate Memorial Hall, London (UK)
Bishopsgate
During a lengthy interview, Paul improvised this new song, and it can be found on the ‘In The World Tonight’ DVD.
27-06-97 – ‘T.F.I. Friday’ (UK)
Flaming Pie / Young Boy
One of only 2 TV performances to promote ‘Flaming Pie’, for this live performance, Paul is backed, rather cleverly, by several other pre-taped Paul McCartney’s, where he/they play a variety of instruments via TV monitors.
15-09-97 – ‘Music For Montserrat’ (UK)
Yesterday / Medley: Golden Slumbers – Carry That Weight – The End / Hey Jude / Kansas City [with Carl Perkins, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Elton John, Phil Collins, Sting, Jools Holland and others]
Introduced by George Martin, for this charity performance, Paul is backed, extremely well, by an all-star band. Broadcast on 16-09-97, and later released on DVD, this turned out to be one of Carl Perkins’ last major performances.
14-10-97 – ‘Standing Stone’, The Royal Albert Hall, London (UK)
Movement I – After Heavy Light Years: "Fire/Rain" Allegro energico – "Cell Growth" Semplice – "'Human' Theme" Maestoso / Movement II – He Awoke Startled: "Meditation" Contemplativo – "Crystal Ship" Con moto scherzando – "Sea Voyage" Pulsating, with cool jazz feel – "Lost at Sea" Sognando – "Release" Allegro con spirito / Movement III – Subtle Colours Merged Soft Contours: "Safe Haven/Standing Stone" Pastorale con moto – "Peaceful Moment" Andante tranquillo – "Messenger" Energico – "Lament" Lamentoso – "Trance" Misterioso – "Eclipse" Eroico / Movement IV – Strings Pluck, Horns Blow, Drums Beat: "Glory Tales" Trionfale – "Fugal Celebration" L'istesso tempo Fresco – "Rustic Dance" Rustico – "Love Duet" Andante intimo – "Celebration" Andante – 6:15r />
‘Standing Stone’ was another classical album, and another chart flop.
24-11-97 – ‘Oprah’ (USA)
Young Boy / Flaming Pie
Impressed by playing via TV monitors on ‘T.F.I. Friday’, Paul repeated the trick on ‘Oprah’. Taped on 20-11-97, this was his only US TV appearance to, belatedly, promote ‘Flaming Pie’.
00-12-97 – Promo Video
Little Willow
The ‘Flaming Pie’ videos up until now had all been a little amateurish-looking (indeed, there were similar ‘home made’ videos featured in the ‘In The World Tonight’ documentary), and didn’t really do the generally high quality songs justice. The video for this beautiful ballad actually looks like some money has been spent on it, featuring, as well as shots of Paul performing the song, a moving storyline of a young mother who becomes ill and dies. It was inspired by Ringo’s ex-wife Maureen Starkey, who died of cancer in 1994, but by this time Paul’s own wife Linda was fighting her own battles. The video is on ‘The McCartney Years’

Beautiful Night [with Ringo Starr]
Following the kind of classic piano-led ballad that Paul could’ve written at almost any time in the previous 25 years, the song breaks into an unexpectedly fast coda, and becomes, effectively, a duet between Paul and Ringo, who also appears in the video. The Paul/Ringo studio segments were taped in Hogs Hill Mill, Icklesham, on 13/14-05-96, while the location scenes were taped on 27-10-97. The video for this No. 25 UK hit is on ‘The McCartney Years’.
00-00-97 – ‘Tropic Island Hum’ (UK)
Tropic Island Hum
A catchy Disney-like song, in the same vein but superior to ‘We All Stand Together’, and featuring the voices of both Paul and Linda, ‘Tropic Island Hum’ was released as a cartoon short for cinematic release in 1997, though it wasn’t released as a single until 2004, when it got to No. 21 in the UK charts.
01-03-98 – ‘Christopher Reeve: A Celebration Of Hope’ (USA)
Calico Skies
Paul was shown on tape playing this acoustic number from ‘Flaming Pie’, presumably pre-taped at some unknown date in the UK.
Linda McCartney died on 17-04-98.
18-04-98 – ‘Happy Birthday Spike’ (UK)
Medley: Yesterday – The Ying Tong Song
This was pre-taped from Paul’s home on an earlier, unknown, date.
