  Chapter One

  Maya

My heart drummed in my ears as I ran down the hallways, so loud, it almost hushed the sound of my ragged breathing echoing in the empty space.

I had been expecting this moment for a long time... eight years to be exact, ever since the night of the attack.

Time hadn't been able to erase those memories from my mind, and I doubted it ever would. They were printed in fire on my mind.

What should have been a glorious night had suddenly turned into the worse nightmare possible.

Blasts echoed in the night, followed by the bloodcurdling screams of people who had awakened us. We should have been out of the house, like every year, attending Christmas mass, but I had caught a cold and spent the day in bed feverish. Mom refused to let me step out of the house, and they stayed in to make me company.

Perhaps if we had gone to church, our story would be different... who knows? But dwelling on what might have been was a senseless job, and I didn't waste my time on that.

I was sitting in bed looking out of the window, shuddering when mom and dad rushed in.

"Put on your coat, sweetie pie, we need to go!" dad had yelled at me.

"What's going on, dad?" I had asked, shivering.

"No time for questions. We need to leave the house now," mom interrupted me, throwing me my favorite coat and pulling me out of bed. "We need to get to a shelter, now."

A thunderous explosion shook the walls of our house, and I screamed as I followed my parents out of the house.

The moment we stepped out of the house, it felt as if we had entered a war zone. Most of the homes around us were already on fire, and when I turned to look at my best friend Fallon's house, my heart almost stopped in my chest. There was a huge, dark monster tearing out the roof of the house. Fallon was in the living room, looking for something, oblivious of the danger+.

"Fallon!" I yelled at her, but with the surrounding chaos, she didn't hear me. "We need to help Fallon," I told dad, but he dragged me out of there, kicking and screaming, towards the local high school. Like many public buildings in the area, the school had a bomb shelter people used during a storm or a tornado.

As we ran down the streets, dodging balls of fire shot from the skies, we could hear people scream as the creatures flying all over the place captured them.

We never got there. One of those hideous creatures captured us while we ran and flew us to an improvised corral with electric fences. Most of our neighbors and friends were already there, but I didn't see Fallon or her family.

People were scared. Their cries echoed in the night, and no one understood what was going on. The power was off, our cell phones were dead, and we were trapped. All we could do was watch as the flying creatures set our little town on fire, destroying it all.

By dawn, some other creatures came and forced us to board some strange vehicles at gunpoint. Some men tried to ask them what was going on, demanding to know where they were taking us, but all they got was a painful electric shock from the weapons the creatures held in their hands.

That first day, we were taken to a huge spaceship, certainly bigger than any ship I had ever seen. The place was imposing and scary, especially for a twelve years old kid.

We were all scared, fearing the worst, but I'm sure reality surpassed the expectations of all those gathered there. The same creatures that forced us into the vehicle hoarded us to a huge room, facing some elevated platforms. A few minutes later, three strange creatures appeared on the platforms as some of the winged creatures landed in the four corners of the room, and we knew.

Aliens captured us. The confirmation made our blood run cold, and some wept. The Asseptians introduced themselves and told us what they expected of us. I didn't understand half of what they said, but whatever it was, it scared my parents. They wrapped their arms around me, tight, and mom started crying.

"Let's not make this any harder on you," one of the Asseptians said with a strange accent. "We will severely punish those who don't comply, and it won't change anything. Follow our orders, and things won't be as bad," the creature concluded in the same monotonous tone.

"Please, form three groups," another one of the aliens ordered, "males to the right, females to the center, and offspring to the left."

Protests erupted all over the room, and the fearsome creatures leading us enforced the orders in those standing at the front. The men's scream of pain was breathtaking.

"Mom... what's going on?" I had asked, wrapping my arms around my mother's waist.

"I don't know, sweetie pie, but we better do what we're told," mom told me, kissing the top of my head. "Everything will be all right," she promised.

However, nothing was ever the same.

That was the last time I saw my parents. They sent me with the rest of the children to another room where we stayed, barely fed, for several days, until the aliens built their headquarters.

I saw him for the first time, the day we were taken down to the ground. He was one of the creatures in charge of the move, and I felt the moment he laid his eyes on me.

That's right. I felt it. It seemed I was on fire, and my head turned instinctively to look at him.

His eyes drew a trail of fire all over my skin, calling my attention, making me look at him and acknowledge him.

It wasn’t anything sexual; it was just weird. I shuddered, from sheer fear, not sure why this alien was looking at me that way. It felt as if I belonged to him.

The feeling was strange and unexpected but also impossible to ignore.

It was probably the first time I took a good look at one of them. They usually hid underneath the dark cloaks they wore all the time. Of course, no cloak was good enough to conceal their massively muscled body or strong hands with black
claws.

His round, purplish eyes with elongated pupils stood out on his almost white face. The bone under his eyebrows and his cheekbone were more protruding than those of a human, making it easy for anyone to know they weren’t human. The bluish scales that started on their forehead, and went over their bald heads, only added to it.

Physically, they weren't exactly what I would call terrifying. The aliens were quite fascinating, and my childish eyes would have found them handsome if not for their permanent scowls and stern expressions.

Getting so much attention from one of them scared me. Trembling, I got behind one of the other girls and tried to stay out of sight. I guessed it worked that one time, but once we were back on the ground, living on the headquarters the aliens built, I didn't seem able to lose him. He was always around, his eyes always on me, letting me know he was watching my every move.

However, that was all he ever did. Look at me from afar.

That is until tonight. I knew from the moment I saw him entering the refectory; things were about to change.

I was one of the girls serving the food, so I had a perfect view from the main door. When he walked in as if he owned the place, a decision written all over his face, I knew.

  He was coming for me.

Scared as hell, I almost dropped the plate I was handing one of the other girls.

Excusing myself, I stepped back into the kitchen area, and as soon as I could, I started running out of there.

It didn’t do me any good. I guess he saw me escape, and a few moments later, I had him on my tail. I knew I didn’t stand a chance against him, but I sure as hell wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Ever since I turned twenty, I had been waiting for the aliens to choose me as a host. I didn’t know any other person who had lived in the children’s quarters for so long. The aliens usually took them immediately when they turned eighteen to become a host or a breeder.

I just hadn't expected it would be him picking me up and dragging me to my nefarious destiny.

He caught me before I was able to reach the dorms. Not that he wouldn’t have followed me there, but it would have given me a few more minutes of freedom while he searched for me in the huge room, filled with chatting girls and bunker beds.

One moment I was running down the hallway; the other, he was smashing me against the wall and imprisoning me with his huge body.

“You can’t escape me,” his words strangely reached me.

At first, it surprised me he talked. In eight years, all I had heard from him were grunts and growls. It took me a few seconds to realize he hadn't actually spoken to me.

I heard his words in my mind. How crazy was that? I shook my head.

“I know that. However, I’m not obliged to make things easier for you,” I replied, loud and clear, still not sure how he was talking to me.

He pressed his hard body against mine and nuzzled my neck, breathing hard and sending chills of thrill down my spine.

Thrill? I couldn't possibly be enjoying this. Was I out of my mind?

  I scoffed at myself.

"Whatever you do won't change anything," he assured me.

"Of course, it won't," I agreed with him, oozing all the hatred I felt for him and the Asseptians for destroying my world and taking me away from my family. "I have to say; it took you long enough. Where are you taking me? Will I become a host, with no mind of my own? Or will you take me to the breeding facilities to be impregnated with children I'll never be allowed to hold in my arms?" I asked, tilting my head back to look at him in the eye.

  His expression darkened.

"That would be such a waste, don't you think?" he asked with a tinge of cruelty in his words. He didn't like me calling out on his sins. "No... I have other plans for you," he whispered, fisting my long auburn mane and tilting my head back, forcing me to look at him.

My entire body shuddered with fear and anticipation. I frowned.

"What do you mean? Where are you taking me?" I asked my boldness from a few moments ago, utterly gone.

“You’ll see when we get there,” he said, with a lustful look on his deep purple eyes.

I had never seen eyes like his before. His friends had plain eyes, none had this incredible shade of purple, and it had been easy to tell him apart from the beginning.

Right now, the purple was darker than ever, and I saw in the raw emotions I had never seen. The robot I was used to was gone, and a primal male had taken its place.

Gasping, startled, I wasn’t able to utter a word. With a victorious grin, he pulled me back from the wall and dragged me to a nearby room, locking us in it.

Desperate, with my heart thundering in my chest, I looked around for a way to escape, but we were in some sort of storage room, with no other exits and no windows.

He leaned back against the door with a predator’s grin on his face.

“There’s no way out,” he pointed out the obvious.

I took a few deep breaths, struggling not to freak out. “How the hell are you talking to me? You’re not moving your lips, and I do not really hear you,” I asked, going for the most straightforward question and trying to buy me some time, though I had no idea what I was trying to avoid.

Or perhaps I was just too naïve. His intentions were written all over his face. The man was after me.

“We’re telepathic creatures. We talk with our minds,” he explained, seeing right through me.

“Why can I hear you?” I asked, intrigued.

I had never heard any of them.

“I’ll answer that question later,” he promised as he walked towards me.

I walked back until my back bumped against one of the shelves. He chuckled and stretched out his hand.

I cringed, waiting for the worst, but he never touched me. Instead, he grabbed something from the shelf behind me and handed it to me.

“Put it on. We need to go,” he ordered, his tone admitting no arguing.

I picked whatever he was giving me and wrapped it. It was a cloak, like the ones he and his man wore. I opened my mouth to ask why I should put it on, but he covered my mouth with his finger.

“No questions asked. Just do as you’re told,” he demanded, in a grave tone, and I pursed my lips but did what he told me.

The cloak was new and resized for me. I was a little over five feet four, and he was almost seven feet tall. His cloak would have been too big for me.

With shaking hands, I put it on and buttoned it under my chin. He stepped closer and pulled the hood over my head, tucking my hair inside so no one would see it.

The graze of his fingers sent strange jolts of energy through my body, and I frowned, not sure what to think of it. This man was an enigma, and his actions were weird, to say the least. What the hell was going on?

  Chapter Two

When I was ready, he grabbed me by my elbow and dragged me out of there. We walked down so many hallways by the time we got out of the building; I was sure I would never be able to find my way back to the children’s quarters.

I wanted to ask him again where he was taking me, but his pose and the look on his face told me it wasn’t a good idea. But the more we walked, the more curious I got.

We had left the main buildings through a small opening on the massive walls, and he was now dragging me through the dark, deserted streets of the ruinous city, avoiding the few lamps scattered around the place and staying out of sight, as much as possible.

I lost track of time when we left the main building, but I was sure we had walked for more than one hour. We were now on the city’s outskirts. Here and there, we could still see a few houses standing amongst the surrounding devastation.

He marched straight to one that looked in better conditions than the rest and opened the door, entering a code.

“Where are we?” I asked, not able to hold back my curiosity.

He turned to look at me and scowled. “Welcome home, Maya.”

I’m not sure what surprised me the most: that he knew my na
me or that he had brought me to his home.

“Home? Whose home?” I asked, playing dumb.

“My home… yours too, from now on,” he stated, leaving no room for doubt.

“Why did you bring me here?” I asked, taking a step back, certain that I didn’t want to go in.

Stepping into his home would change my life forever. I could feel it in my bones, and it scared the hell out of me.

“This is not my home. You and your people destroyed my home,” I spurted out in a harsh tone, oozing more fear than I would have wished.

“The Asseptians are not my people,” he snarled at me, and there was so much hatred in his tone that it truly scared me.

“That’s not important, not really. You were a part of it all,” I replied, scowling.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about,” his tone reeked sheer grudge.

“Enlighten me,” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.

He closed the distance between us and towered over me with his almighty body. “The moment for explanations will come, but this certainly isn’t the one,” he snarled, grasping my elbow and smashing me against his sturdy body.

Startled, I gasped, and before I could utter a word, his lips pressed to mine and claimed a fierce kiss that blew my mind and stole my breath away. His harsh tongue caressed my lips, inviting them to open up, and though my mind struggled to make some sense of what was going on, my treacherous body surrendered to his will.

My lips allowed him in, and he pulled me closer, sliding his hands to my face and cradling it to deepen the kiss. His tongue played against mine, in a sensual dance that fired up my entire body.

My heart drummed so loud in my chest I was sure he could hear it while I slowly gave in to the strange feelings coursing through me.

What kind of magic was this? How was this possible? Why was my body responding to his touch and his caresses as if it was made for it? It didn’t make any sense, and yet it was so real it was impossible to deny, much less to reject.

When he finally slid out to allow me to breathe, I pushed him away and stepped back. “Is this your plan? To turn me into your whore?” I asked him, oozing contempt.
