  Venice, An Interior

fn1 At the time this was written, the interior walls of Palazzo Grassi were painted a shade of pink.

  The Weekly Return to Childhood

fn1 In the 1991–2 league season, Real Madrid lost the Spanish league to their arch-rivals, FC Barcelona, on a dramatic final day when they were defeated 3–2 by CD Tenerife.

  For Me Alone to Read

fn1 Arturo Pérez-Reverte is a contemporary Spanish novelist and columnist who embarked on a career as a reporter and war reporter in the 1970s, before beginning to write in the 1980s. He is of Javier Marías’s generation (they were both born in 1951) and they have become good friends over the years. Their friendship started by way of the dialogue they initiated through their weekly newspaper columns, which were published in the same supplement in the 1990s.

  Time Machines

fn1 Ramón María del Valle-Inclán (1866–1936) was a Spanish writer whose image is indelibly etched in literary consciousness through many portraits, illustrations and photographs: he always sported round spectacles, long hair and a very long and somewhat unkempt beard, black at first, then greying and white as he grew older.

  A Hero from 1957

fn1 The Institución Libre de Enseñanza was an educational and cultural institution founded in 1876 on the principles of secularism, co-education, academic freedom, sporting activities and manual work or handicrafts. It had a lasting influence on culture and higher education in Spain at the end of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, even after it was shut down by Franco in 1939.
