The Party Crasher: Novella Page 10

He passed her the flowers. “It’s a sorry excuse for an apology, but I hoped it would be a start. Then I could take you out to breakfast. Pancakes or donuts or whatever you want.”

He smiled and her insides flipped.

“But, I don’t understand. If you wanted out of your dad’s shadow, why open a bar here in Stony Brook? Why not somewhere else?”

“So I could prove to my dad and others that I was my own man, but in reality, I think I had to prove it to myself more. I realize nothing that I have done seems logical. But, Kit, you are the one thing in my life right now that feels right. This bar adventure is new and scary. I made amends with my dad last night, and I’ll be honest, starting over after seven years of anger seems scary. But I find strength when I’m with you. Please stay. Let me take you out on a real date.”

She nuzzled her nose in the pink flowers, and stared up at him through hooded, wet eyes. “I understand the feeling of proving something to yourself and to others. I needed to do the same thing with this job. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.”

“So, does that mean you forgive me?” He scooted closer, a crooked smile hanging on his lips.

“I think so.” She nodded. “But you know something else?”

“What’s that?” He took another step closer.

“I like donuts a lot, but I think sex and donuts sounds better. Don’t you?”

“You had me at sex.” He pulled her in for an ardent kiss, one so passionate her knees buckled. Thankfully, he was there to pick her up, and rescue her, just like he’d done from the moment they met.
