A Lover's Mercy Page 19

“I know.” Bubbles slide from my skin and circle the drain.

Mai’s low sigh comes softly. “Before, I was angry that you chose not to use your gifts the way I do. That’s not fair. I can admit that now. All I want is for you to be you and for us to be together.”

My heart thumps wildly. All I can do is stand still under the hot spray, water running over my head and into my eyes.

“I-I appreciate that.” Despite the water rushing over me, my lips feel dry.

I lick them and turn away from the open expression that sits so effortlessly on her face. Although we’ve talked about what it means for us to be together since that craziness with Ethan last week, this is the first time she’s actually apologized for wanting me to be other than I am.

“That doesn’t seem like that much to ask.” I tease her with the return of my smile.

“Good.” She breathes out a sigh, a matching smile curving up her mouth. “Now hurry up. Ana and Carmen have breakfast waiting and you don’t want it to get cold.”

It’s way too early for breakfast, but I don’t want to rain on their parade.

She stands up and puts her palm against the shower glass. I press my cheek to the warmth seeping through the glass from her skin and into me. “I’ll be right there.”

“And I’ll be waiting,” she says softly.

We share a long look before she turns and leaves me under the water, breathing easily for the first time in weeks.

Ash must learn to control this impressive power, before it controls her. She turns to her tough, steadfast lover Cleo, with talents of her own, to help Ash in her struggle to stay firmly rooted in her humanity.

The women seek a cause worthy of their skills, refusing to allow the destructive side of Ash’s ability to be used by any outside forces—military or mythical. A hazardous rescue mission hurtles them back to the desert they’d left far behind, links their past and present, and just may be what Ishtar had in mind all along.
