Lydia was sad to see her mother leave the day after the funeral, but even if Arthur had allowed Debra to stay, Arnold’s body needed to be buried. The family and the main funeral had to be taken care of, and if Debra missed any more days of work she would certainly be fired. Debra promised to write to her. Lydia handed her a letter to deliver to Dariela, assuming Debra would be faster than the post office.

“I’ll give your best to the family,” Debra said, as Sylvia waited in the car to take her home.

“Thanks,” Lydia said, embracing her and committing that feeling to memory. “I love you.”

“I love you, too, sweetheart.” Then she departed, waving to Lydia until the Cave’s gates closed.
