The Housemaid Page 27

by Sarah A. Denzil

It called to me. I’d finally figured out the ending—no, beginning—to my story.

The morning of the next visit I woke up excited for the first time, and I didn’t even need a vat of coffee to energise me for the day. In fact, I left early, and I dressed in my smartest clothes. When the same nurse started talking to me, I decided to take a chance.

“Could you tell me how you trained for your job? I think I’d like to do it too.”

“I’d love to,” she said. “Why don’t we meet for a coffee after my shift? I finish at four today. You can still get the bus back to Paxby until six.”

That afternoon, Charlie finished my doll. I asked him if we could have her wearing a nurse’s uniform. He agreed, and we started making it together.
