The Countdown Begins Page 34

by Patrick Higgins

Chelsea Mulrooney was tired of going back and forth in this rut. Back and forth. Back and forth. Had she only gone to the fireworks festivities, perhaps she, too, would have been blown to pieces from the explosives and wouldn’t have to do it herself.

It was said that brainwashing was nothing more than repeating the same thing over and over until even the most stupid person finally understood it. Chelsea Mulrooney now understood that statement perfectly clear. Convinced there was only one way out of her misery, the only thing left was choosing which option to take.

With the decision made, her means to this particular end would never make it onto the video.

The last thing she wanted was to expose her family and online friends to another devastating suicide video. Renate McCallister’s video was enough to scar a person for several lifetimes.

Chelsea’s message was short, to the point, and completely void of drama. Clinical would be the best way to describe her voice.

She looked in the camera with eyes that already looked dead and, in a soft-spoken voice, said, “I hope you can forgive me, Mom and Dad, for doing this to you. You already have enough to worry about than coping with yet another family tragedy. But I see no other way out.

“With so much bloodshed in the world, I’ve finally concluded that life won’t get any better. No matter where I look, I see no evidence of a brighter future. Society’s walls keep crumbling all around us. The many ongoing wars. The earthquakes. Now this deadly attack on America?

“Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure Salvador Romanero will do many good things for humanity, but one thing he won’t do is create a new utopia that’s free of evil. And I’m okay with that. Truth be told, I never thought he could do it anyway.

“But what I’m not okay with is having to choose between family members. Not that you left me much of a choice, Mom. Yes, I’m mad at you for leaving Dad and for abandoning me. I can’t understand for the life in me why you did it. I thought I’d never see the day when my own parents would separate.

“As a divorced woman myself, I know I have no right to speak on this topic. But after thirty-five years of marriage, you leave Dad a goodbye letter? Seriously? Do you realize how devastated he is? He’s been in a fog ever since you left him. He looks like a zombie!

“I know we haven’t communicated much since the disappearances, but that never changed the fact that the two of you were always my peace in this crazy world. My life was supposed to be screwed up, not yours!

“I always took comfort knowing you and Dad would always be together. Even when you disagreed on things, there was always this mutual respect the two of you had for each other’s feelings and opinions. What happened Mom and Dad?”

Chelsea started weeping. “I’m sorry, but if I have to choose between either of you, I choose death instead! I see no other way out. This recent catastrophe was the icing on the cake. It robbed me of the will to want to continue on. I can’t possibly fathom living on this planet another day.

“As for you, Brian, I still love you. But how can I forgive you for destroying the family the way you did? What you did to Renate was downright criminal. I will forever mourn her death. And moving to Pennsylvania without telling me or Dad was a low blow. Then to brainwash Mom to moving there with you. It’s unforgivable?! It’s like you’ve sucked all the life out of Dad. I’m so ashamed of you!

“Try as I might, I can’t seem to wrap my head around the many bizarre things you’ve done of late! I know you’re sold out to your new religious cult and you’ll never change. That’s your decision. But I can’t accept how you used it to destroy the family. We were a good family, a happy family. I was always so proud to call you my brother. All my life I looked up to you! Then your brain went haywire and you tore us all apart. This is something else I can’t forgive.

“Who knows, perhaps in the next life God will hit the reset button and we can be a happy family again. Then I’ll forgive you. Since I’ll be the first one on the other side, I’ll keep myself busy preparing things to the best of my ability until the three of you join me, whenever that time may be. That’s the only hope I have left.

“That’s all I have to say. Until we meet again, dearest family, just know in your hearts that I love you and already miss you all so much. Goodbye for now...”

At that, the video ended. Chelsea Mulrooney slit both of her wrists in the bathtub, then emailed the video to her father. The last thing she saw before closing her eyes and breathing her last breath in human form, were the words, “Message successfully sent!”

Then the world started spinning away and Chelsea was no longer part of it...

DICK MULROONEY WAS DOWN in the living room watching the breaking news on TV, of the 127 house fires burning all across New York City’s five boroughs, when he was notified that he had a message from his daughter.

At first, he ignored it. On the night of the explosions, Dick wanted to take Chelsea to a fallout shelter, but didn’t want to chance leaving the house without the proper protective gear.

The next option was to seal all doors and windows with the strongest adhesive tape he could find down in the cellar, and hope and pray it would work.

  So far, so good.

Now this? Thousands of house fires blazing all across America, including Alaska and Hawaii?

Dick Mulrooney buried his face in his hands. He was already on maximum overload, at his wit’s end, really.

He turned off the TV and checked his email.

It was a video message from Chelsea. Seeing the hopelessness in his daughter’s eyes, suddenly the thousands of out-of-control house fires in his country seemed more comforting to him.

  He braced himself.

Before the message even ended, Dick raced up the stairs and found his daughter lying in a bloody bathtub with her head resting on the tile wall. He lost all strength. “No, Chelsea! Please God, no!”

It was too late. She was gone...

After three hours of inexpressible agony, Dick Mulrooney finally found the strength to call 9/11, then pulled himself together just enough to make a brief video of his own.

When Brian was notified that he had a message from his father, his legs turned to jelly. When he saw his father looking completely out of sorts, as if he’d just lost his best friend, he braced himself for what he knew would be even more tragic news.

Without any sort of greeting Dick gritted his teeth and came straight to the point, “I want you to know your sister just committed suicide. I found her dead in the bathtub with two slit wrists. I thought about calling you but wanted you to see first-hand the pain and anguish you’ve caused me.

“Thanks to you, I’m all alone in the world. You’ve cost me a wife and only daughter. And a grandson!”

Grandson? Brian thought, not knowing to whom his father was referring...

“If your plan was to destroy a beautiful family, you’ve succeeded. Congratulations, Brian! Are you happy now? Whatever happened to honoring your mother and father?! Isn’t that one of the Ten Commandments?! I’m quite sure it is,” Dick said sarcastically, in between sniffles.

“I never knew I had the capacity to hate someone as much as I hate you right now! You’re nothing but a monster! Because of you and your false religion, I no longer have a family.”

Dick Mulrooney shook his head. “You’ve destroyed so many lives and caused the deaths of at least three people that I know of. Who knows how many more deaths I might find at your hands if I started digging. Perhaps I will. At any rate, it’s because of you that two young women, including your own sister, took their lives.”

After taking a few moments to collect himself, Dick Mulrooney wiped his moist eyes with his shirt sleeve and looked straight in the camera, “Remember when I said I never wanted to see you again? Well, I take it back. I do want to see you again.

“Let this message serve as fair warning that you won’t get away with this, son. Son, ha, what a joke! You’re not my son; you’re the devil in disguise!

  “I want y
ou to know I’ve become quite close with your in-laws, and with Renate’s sister, Megan. The one thing we have in common is a shared hatred for you. You already know Megan wants justice for what happened to her mother and sister. The only thing the Leglers want is their daughter back. Nothing more.

“But that’s them. As for me, finding you is my new mission in life. It’s time for you to pay for your many sins! Thanks to the Leglers, the search has been narrowed down to Pennsylvania. You have my word that if universal authorities don’t find you, I will! And when I do, I’ll kill you! May God have mercy on your soul!”

  The message ended...

“They will be divided, father against son and son against father,

mother against daughter and daughter against mother,

  mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law”

  (Luke 12:53).

Patrick Higgins is the author of The Pelican Trees, Coffee in Manila, The Unannounced Christmas Visitor (Winner of the 2018 Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal in Christian fiction), and the award-winning prophetic end-times series titled, Chaos in the Blink of an Eye. While the stories he writes all have different themes and take place in different settings, the one thread that links them all together is his heart for Jesus and his yearning for the lost.

With that in mind, it is his wish that the message his stories convey will greatly impact each reader, by challenging you not only to contemplate life on this side of the grave, but on the other side as well. After all, each of us will spend eternity at one of two places, based solely upon a single decision which must be made this side of the grave. That decision will be made crystal clear to each reader of these books.
