  Avery

I woke up and smiled there was something mysterious about the day. I just knew it was going to be a great day!

Then I heard my mom say:

“You are going to have an amazing day today, Avery, right?”

Yes, Of course. It is going to be a great day in California’s Bay Area.

The sun is out and I feel lucky to live in the Bay next to the cool tech geniuses. I am somewhat of a geek myself and I love. A girl who knows how to code. What could be better. But I digress.

I turn to my mom and smile.

I said, “Of course, mom it’s going to be fantastic.”

She laughed and said, “You seem upbeat today.”

  I said, “Yes.”

“Well that is good then,” Mom smiled as she prepared breakfast. The stress lines all over her face couldn’t hide the truth about our tough life.

It was getting harder by the day. The area was expensive and it’s been that way ever since my father lost his job at the factory which got shut down.

I guess there was no need for it anymore. Most of the jobs got outsourced as mom put it. So now Mom is basically the breadwinner. She brings in most of the money to support the family. I say most because I try chipping in sometimes.

  I have a job.

But it does not pay much.

I feel terrible because mom works so hard to make ends meet. More on that later.

I have two sisters. My older sister is Jessica, she’s super smart. She started college two years ago.

She’s the one I feel knows everything. I turn to her for advice here and there.

And then you have my younger sister who sort of looks up to me. She always has something to say.

She keeps asking about my Prom date. Unfortunately, I do not have one yet.

But the truth is I don’t know.

It really hasn’t crossed my mind.

  Which honestly is a lie.

I had someone in mind. A guy in school, who I have the greatest crush on. But honestly I doubt he knows I exist.

I grabbed my lunch bag set to bolt out the door, when suddenly my mother said, “did you forget something?”

I turned and noticed mom had my work badge in her hands. I gasped.

“I almost forgot, shoot. Thanks Mom.”

That would have been a problem. My boss insists we have our badge on. It helps with the Waffle Diner’s flair.

  Don’t ask.

Yes I work at the diner after school.

  I’m a waitress over there.

It’s a great gig, and it makes me happy.

Plus, I’m able to contribute to the family.

I smile and head out the door.

I don’t have a car so I still take the bus.

It’s okay it gets a little crazy on the bus. Some girls are always on their phones, taking Selfies.

Honestly, I still don’t get it. I’m not really big on social media, even though I created a social media page, I haven’t gotten around to updating it lately. I figured it will just disappear someday.

The moment I stepped off the bus, I looked up and there he was, the hot guy, my crush!

  He did not notice me.

He had all the cool girls hovering all around him, hanging onto his every word.

  I sighed.

  He was just so handsome.

He was the star of the hockey team and me?

Well, I was just an ordinary girl geek who dreamed of someday ending up with the hot guy.

Isn’t that the way it happens in the movies?

I wanted that to happen for me too.

  My friends noticed my crush.

They often joked that I liked the popular bad boy. They added I should let my fantasy go.

They said I needed to stay away from the movies.

  It is not reality.

  But then what’s real?

Watching YouTube videos or make up Hauls?

I wondered. I would rather stay home and code. But something different happened today.

Today he stopped and stayed watching me.

  I blushed.

Oh boy is this really happening.

I wanted to go over to him to say something. But then my feet would not move.

  “Why is that?” I grumbled.

  He smiled.

His perfect smile took my breath away.

He had that perfect tousled hair and a natural tan.

His smile oh my goodness , it was pretty amazing!

I wanted to say something to him, but I couldn’t get the words out.

And from the look of it, he wanted to talk to me too! I was so nervous. I stood still.

Okay Avery, say Hi or maybe he will say hello. I stared into his dreamy eyes. This is crazy.

  His smile was infectious.

The girls were all over him.

But he was looking directly at me.

  Wow!

  I wondered what that meant.

He looked like he was about to walk up towards me. But then, the girls tugged at him.

I decided maybe I should walk up and say hi.

“Here goes nothing,” I said underneath my breath ready to make a move, when suddenly an old friend from the chess club, Ethan walked up.

Darn it. I cursed underneath my breath. I wouldn’t be able to speak with Owen now.

“Hey, Avery are you going to the prom hmm?” Ethan the guy who would probably rule the world some day, just not today asked.

  He had braces.

  They worked for him.

He was not bad looking either.

But then, He assumed I did not have a date for the prom and that infuriated me.

I couldn’t believe he would think something like that.

I opened my mouth to speak when I noticed Owen was no longer there.

He had gone into the school.

  I sighed.

Oh well, I guess, I will have to wait.

  I turned to Ethan.

I let him know I have not made my decision.

“Hmm, I am still undecided,” I said, sliding my hair behind my ears. I brushed him aside and walked past. I thought about Owen.

OH well may be we will meet sometime later.

  Hopefully soon.

I immediately hurried into school to begin classes f
or the day.

The moment I stepped into the building two girls laughing hysterically and pointing at my outfit walked up. The stopped laughing.

Then they asked to take a selfie.

I tried to stop them. I tried telling them I would be late to class. But they giggled and did it anyway.

I was livid they were obviously making fun of me.

I hoped they wouldn’t post it online.

I wanted to say something but then I heard the bell and headed to class. I guess that would wait. Besides no one really knows who I am or do they?

  Owen

I noticed her, Avery at lunch seated all alone. She is gorgeous. I smiled and thought now this is my opportunity to speak with her.

I figured I had nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

  She is beautiful.

I know to some she is not the beauty magazine type, or super model. But in my eyes she was absolutely perfect all the way round. My crew is not pleased thought.

I tried walking over to seat with her when Blake my best friend pulled me back.

He scoffed, “Oh no you are not feeling sorry for her are you? Owen get over here.”

He tugged on my arm. Then he ushered me to a table with the other guys.

  I sighed.

I don’t know what Blake has against her but he has the wrong impression for sure. Avery is a brilliant. She is a girl would likely succeed in the future, plus she seemed nice.

We exchanged glances in class during the day. She is super smart.

She answered a lot of the teacher's questions, smart.

Plus, she was great in Math and the sciences. I heard she was a coding genius too.

  She was the whole package.

Honestly, I would love to date her.

But then not with these guys. around. I know it sounds shallow but I do not need to hear anything from them.

I stay watching her and checking her out as the guys buzz around me.

They talk about their parent’s investments, vacation homes and their trust funds. It is a bore.

I can’t help but watch as she looks up.

Then she smiled and honestly her smile did something to my brain.

I wondered if she felt the same way.

I pictured what it would be like dancing with her at the prom. I bet we would probably have a great time.

And with any luck we would have some alone time, away from my guys.

“Hey Earth to Owen. Are you with us?” Blake asks jolting me back to reality.

I turn towards Blake and smile. I wish she would just leave me alone. But he wouldn’t. He still doesn’t like Avery. Well, that’s his problem not mine. I say underneath my breath. Then I turned to what’s her. Just then two of the most popular girls in school walked up, Carly and Lisa.

  They were all over me.

Honestly I did not listen to what they had to say.

All I thought about was Avery.

I wanted to get to know her better.

I mean that’s exactly why I am here. I keep looking at her while girls fawn over me.

I know it sounds kind of cocky. But that’s not my intention. She smiles and I smile back.

And in that moment I decide enough.

I would rather be with her instead of hanging around my friends here. Besides all they do is talk about what will happen at the prom.

The only reason I cared about the prom is because maybe Avery would go with me to the event.

  So what did I do?

I slid their hands off me and said, “if you guys excuse me I have to meet with someone over there.”

I did not give them a chance to respond.

But judging from the looks on their faces and their open mouths, they were not pleased.

But that’s their problem not mine.

I walked up to her and said “hello.”

she gasped and looked around for a moment. Then looked up at me and asked, “Me?”

I chuckled, nodded and said “yes you.”

I asked to sit with her.

She was about to say okay, when suddenly the bell rang again. We had to get back to Class.

  I cursed underneath my breath.

I didn’t want it to be over so quickly.

It seemed like time just flew by.

  I said, “Avery right?”

She smiled surprised I knew her name. she responded, “yes it’s Avery and you are Owen”

“yes that’s what they call me. Lets do something later,” I said to her.

She said, “Oh, sorry but I have to work. We will see okay.”

I nodded and watched as she got up.

I offered to walk with her back to class.

  But she declined.

I wondered if she liked me. Or was it just a dream.

  She is beautiful and intelligent.

She’s definitely someone I would like to get to know better.

Just then I heard Blake calling my name.

  He did not look happy.

Well, that’s his problem not mine.

I turned back to see her once more.

She walked away with a group of friends.

I thought, well someday we will be together, maybe? Hopefully soon because I would like her to be my prom date.

  Avery

I did not see him later on that day.

I mean we crossed paths in the halls but of course did not have a chance to talk.

It made perfect sense. Finals would be underway so everyone had so much to do.

Later on I stopped by my favorite local library before heading to work. I figured it would be a great place to study for the finals and do some coding or something. I had so much to get done working on my app.

I had an hour to to kill before heading off to my waitressing job. So that’s exactly what I did. I sat down, looking at some books while trying to code, when suddenly I received it direct social media message on my device.

I looked down and there it was a nice little heart Emoji from him! Yes, Owen.

  Wow!

I smiled and palmed my face.

I searched for anything, I could find about him on Google and I bet he was doing the same thing too!

Only difference is, he sent me a direct message them made me blush. He sent another message. It read:

  “I love your smile.”

I looked around the room to see if he was that close.

What did he mean by he loves my smile? Was he looking at my social media account? Because I don’t have not have any smiling pictures online.

  I gasped and looked around.

I turned to see him standing behind me.

  I gasped, my eyes widened.

He chuckled and asked if he could join me.

“Hi Avery, can I join you?”

  I blushed and nodded.

Then I watched as he grabbed the seat next to mine. He asked “what are you working on?”

“Oh, just Coding an app and studying for my literature exam.”

“Multitasking, I see,” He said with a smile on his face.

I laughed and said, “Yes I guess you can say so.”

My heart beat fast. I couldn’t believe it. Owen my crush sat next to me. He looked incredibly smart too.

I wondered what he was doing in the library. So I asked.

  “Are you here to study?”

  “Yeah… you can say that.”

  He opened a book.

I looked down at the book he had open on the desk and chuckled. He had the book upside down.

He noticed and laughed. That is the moment, he admitted he saw me walk in and decided he wanted to get to know me better. I blushed and smiled. I couldn’t believe he liked me. He beamed and said, “I could use your help too.”

  “Really?”

  “Yes.”

“What do you need,” I asked.

“I need a study partner, I have this crazy test coming up. Will you help me?”

I beamed and said, “Sure!” And with that, he s
miled and hugged me. Then he pulled back almost immediately. I wanted to stay in his arms. I couldn’t believe he hugged me. We made plans to meet and had a great conversation. He asked if he could take me home. I declined. I did not want him to see where I lived. Plus, I still had to work on my app.

“I have to finish my app.”

  “An app, that is great.”

“Yes, it helps parents find services for their special needs kids.”

“Cool. Maybe you could promote it someday.”

“Yes, that would be great. But I would love to give it to the parents for free.”

I didn’t tell him; I wrote the app because I had a cousin who died because his parents could not find the services and specialists who could help him with his condition.

Owen got up and said bye.

I continued working on my app, then I headed out to my evening job. It was great. I got more tips than usual. I guess it was a great day over all. Then I headed home. I couldn’t wait to tell my sisters all about this great guy!

I know he wants to study with me, but I consider it a date. I couldn’t wait to tell Kendall all about my meeting with the Hockey star! The most popular boy in school!

  Avery

The minute I arrived home, I told my sister Kendall all about my day.

She seemed happy to hear everything.

She listened as I spoke about his gorgeous hair, his incredible smile, his dark eyes, and his ripped body. She laughed and said, “Wait you did nothing with him, right?”

I paused and gasped. Then I shook my head and said, “Oh no nothing like that? No. Maybe a kiss someday. But no.”

“Good. Just so you know. You must play it safe especially with guys on the hockey team. I mean they are hot and all but you cannot get carried away whatever you do.”

I smiled and said, “Got it.”

I got on the bed next to her.

  She laughed.

I asked, “What are you reading?”
