“I guarantee you there is only one Rossino Otto.” Like riding a bike, I pedaled faster. “Crafted by the hands of a master, there has never been a rare collectible as priceless, and there never will be again.”
The Rossino Otto completed a full turn as I held up a key — one that had been around my neck for months. Climbing into the coupe, I inserted the key into an ignition designed ahead of its time. Turning the key, the ferocious beast roared to life as I gunned the engine. Flames burst from the silver-chromed pipes to a deafening cheer.
Climbing out of the coupe, I had captured the world’s attention. “You’ve seen it with your own eyes. Now, bidding starts at $10 million.” I pointed at Marcus Nicholson. “And I promised Silicon Swindler the first bid.” All eyes turned to the screen above the stage. Using a custom app on his cell, Marcus bid $25 million.
The buzz in the room was contagious as bids jumped by tens of millions at a rapid-fire pace. Calling out each bid like a preacher urging the lost to salvation, the crowd fueled the coal of a locomotive toward the altar of $300 million.
From the beginning, the rat pack were the frontrunners, volleying back and forth until the only two left were Alan Leung and Marcus Nicholson.
“Three hundred million… going once… going twice… sold!”
Marcus jumped like Curry winning Game Seven in the NBA finals, high-fived Levowitz and a row of network executives, then darted towards the stage. A jib camera followed his every move as the crowd erupted. The rookie hit a grand slam in the World Series.
Handing Marcus the key, I stepped off stage ready to escape the spotlight. Relief took the edge off the rush. To my right, Elena walked towards me — and to my left, Laney did the same — leaving me only seconds to decide which blank canvas would be my masterpiece.
