To Love a Spy Page 99

by Aileen Fish

John peered over Trudy’s shoulder, then picked up the broken frame. He glanced back at Elizabeth. Without a word he came back to the bed and set them, face down, on her lap.

“I don’t understand—” Her eyes latched onto a worn scroll poking from the broken frame. With shaking fingers, she pulled it from its hidden slot and handed it to John. “My other hand does not seem to be working,” she whispered.

He accepted it with a short nod and unrolled it. After a stunned silence, he said, “I think we’ve found your legacy. Perhaps all of your father’s tales weren’t so tall.”

“If this is what it appears, then you are the proud owner of one of Francis Drake’s lost maps.” John looked at her with a tender smile. “You are a rich woman in her own right. You’ve no need for me then.”

“I’ve need for you. You and Trudy.” Her gaze landed out the window, seeing Papa from a time when she was Trudy’s young age of eight. They sat around the dinner table, a happy trio, her, Mama and him. Papa was in especially buoyant spirits. He’d come home that afternoon, swung Mama off her feet into a whirl that had her laughing like a schoolgirl. Within days, he’d become nervous, irritable. Frightened even. She had no wish to suffer the same fate. “Perhaps it can be sold. The proceeds used to feed Union troops.”

He sank down beside her again, touched his lips to hers. “Perhaps,” he agreed. “Just as long as you remain at my side.”

  “Forever. Forever more, my love.”
