I opened my eyes and sat up, moaning from the tightness in my lower back and in my legs. I tucked the sheet under my arms, allowing Jayden to support me with his arm.
“It’s not what you think.” I patted the empty space next to me. There wasn’t any evidence that Victoria had been here. Her clothes were gone.
“You better tell me what’s going on. You’ve been MIA for two days, have nasty bruised and swelling on your face and neck, and I caught one of the richest woman in Manhattan running out of here like a bat out of hell.” He titled my chin up to get a closer look at my neck.
I pushed his hand aside. “It’s a long story, but I can’t go into all the details right now. What I can tell you is that I’m no longer working at Virago. There’s also going to be an announcement today from Benjamin Duarte about Colette resigning as executive editor.”
His eyes widened and his mouth dropped. “Huh?”
“It’s all good. I’ve been given a generous severance package, and there’s a good chance I’ll be going to England with Victoria.” A nervous fluttering expanded in my stomach. She never said she wanted me to go away with her. Also Jayden’s “bat out of hell reference” to Victoria leaving without waking me gave me some concern.
“You were fired? Was it because of the interview Colette wanted you to do?” he asked.
“There’s more to it than the interview. I can’t give any details because I signed a confidentiality agreement.” I smiled at him. “Meeting Victoria the way I did and leaving Virago is the best thing for me now.”
“I’m so confused.” He pressed his fingers to the side of his head. “You’re going to England? When?”
“As soon as Victoria does. I need to get dressed and find out where she ran off to.” I wrapped the sheet around me and went to get off the bed, but paused when I spotted her pearl bracelet on the end table. I reached over and picked it up.
“What’s that?” Jayden asked.
I slid the bracelet on my wrist. “It’s Victoria’s bracelet. She always wears it. I’m surprised she forgot it.”
“Maybe she didn’t forget it and wanted you to have it,” he pointed out.
“Or maybe she left it here because it gives me the perfect excuse to return it to her.” I refused to think it was a parting gift from Victoria. She was sending me a specific message, and one I was going to answer.

I didn’t expect Victoria to answer her phone when I called her. It went right to her voice mail. If she wanted me to hunt for her, I was up for challenge. Maybe she wanted proof I was serious about us. Some part of me wanted the crazy excitement, the thrill of the unknown. With Victoria I would definitely get that, and then some.
I started my search where she was queen of her realm — Nox Media Headquarters, where I had first visited little over a week ago with the intention to discover the real person she hid from the world. But unlike my first meeting, I was more self-assured and on a specific mission; one I would succeed in. I wore the same ensemble as the first time I had met Victoria, but I left my hair down. I added a scarf to cover my neck and more make up than I was used to wearing to hide my bruises. Jayden was my first test. When he smiled and wished me luck, I knew I had succeeded.
I walked in the Nox Media building and strode up to security, announcing I was there for an appointment with Victoria. One of the guards called to confirm.
Butterflies crept into my stomach and I almost started to pace. When Annette came down to escort me up, I wanted to cheer. Miss Nox was waiting for me in her office. We took the same elevator up to the fortieth floor, and when we exited, there was a hum in the air, a great deal of activity from people working at their desks. This time when I was directed to the small alcove in front of Victoria’s office, the double doors were open. I entered without permission, spotting Victoria in front of her desk, wearing an emerald blouse and grey trousers. Her hair was secured back in a tight knot.
I closed the doors but didn’t go to her. “You left something special behind.”
She walked toward me with a purposeful stride. “Yes I did.”
“Why?” I lifted my arm, showing off her bracelet.
She stopped. “I knew you would bring it back to me.”
“What if I didn’t? Would you come back and take it from me?”
“If you didn’t see me by the end of today, I would have found you.” She drew me in close. “How else would I have given you your ticket for our flight?”
I rested my palm on her chest where her heart beat rapidly, much like mine at that moment. “Ticket to where?”
“Where do you think?” She took my hand and kissed the inside of my wrist uncovered by her bracelet.
“No more games, just say it.” I barely stop from sighing as her lips brushed over my skin.
“You’re coming to England with me.”
The heavy weight I’d been carrying drifted away. I wrapped my arms around her neck and smiled. “We’ll make it work between us.”
“It’s not going to be all roses and champagne for us.” She sounded more contemplative than apprehensive.
“I’m up for the challenge,” I said, kissing her long and hard.
“You won’t be disappointed,” she whispered against my lips.
Before I lost myself in her arms, I noticed the décor in her office had changed. The walls had been painted a more vibrant red. The carpet and furniture was also new, with the exception of Victoria’s desk.
“You redecorated your office?” I asked, amazed she could concentrate on something like that with all her current drama.
“Yes, but I’m keeping the same desk and chair.” She untied my scarf. “Both were my uncle’s.”
“A big improvement.” I ran my hands down her back.
“But you’re not here to talk about my office.” She unbuttoned my jacket and then my blouse. “I’d rather not talk at all.”
“Has your new couch been tested out yet?” I caught my breath as her hand disappeared inside my bra.
“Not yet. But you’ll be the first to try it out.” With her hand on my breast and her other cupping the back of my head, she kissed me soundly, guiding me over to her new couch. Discarding the rest of my clothes, and then hers, until I was left wearing the pearl bracelet, and she her matching necklace, we christened her office for the first time.
This leg of our fantastical journey had ended, but the next one, right around the corner waited for us….
