I never thought I’d get here after everything. Always wondered how people found inner peace, thinking it was a load of bollocks. But I’d found it. I really was at peace in my life right now, even if the world was still catching up.
The Chief (River) was back in power and trying to build bridges, in constant talks with the new High Alpha.
There was a long way to go. The elf trials were still going on, along with the witch and warlock and human ones. Even the odd banshee. Some peeps had been executed, some imprisoned. It was a global rollout of justice that would probably carry on for the next two years.
But things were changing. The world had a new leader, a new direction to head in when this mess was cleaned up. Maybe there would be some sort of world peace. Okay, nope. That’d never happen. Let’s call it a new world order, then.
Cities were being rebuilt. I hadn’t been back to London since I’d left and didn’t intend to anytime soon.
G pulled out of our shingled driveway, heading downhill on the country road.
Cardiff here we come.
* * *
All of us gathered in the garden of the white mansion, sitting under a marquee.
Me, G, Ryoka, Zach, Sarah, Riku, some of Sarah’s family and friends, Ally, Drew (now part of the ten uber wolves), as well as Lucy and Polly (day vampires and former café owners)— we were all sat around a table with an awesome spread of food and drink laid out.
The sun had upped its game. No worries. Loved the sun so much nowadays. Thanked the tenshi for it every day.
Yeah, the tenshi. I was over my anger. There was no point in holding onto any grudge against them and their manipulation. The job had got done. End of.
The garden was huge and surrounded by huge, sculpted hedgerow. There was a werewolf guard every few feet, forming a ring around our party. I mean, there had to be. Sarah Murakami, High Alpha, was at her Cardiff residence with the rest of her ten uber wolves, on a tour of the country, and throwing a big fancy party for Riku.
My littlest bro was turning one.
I was sat with Zach, G, and Ryoka. My other brother lived in Bristol with my uncle in a nice house on a quiet street.
Phi, Zach’s elf girlfriend, had been found dead, killed by the iron rain. She’d been murdered by a human elf follower as she’d tried to stop the Hope Device being fired.
Zach was on his own healing journey now. We video called every day, and he was coming back with us later to stay with us for a few weeks. He was thinking of moving up to north Wales with his brewery business. The city life wasn’t for him anymore.
One good thing about the talks between wolf and elf was them working together to try and find a way to save the elven realm—some magical solution.
If that wasn’t healing steps, I didn’t know what was.
Uncle Ryoka was happy in his house, living a quiet life like me, getting over the loss of his brother in his own way.
Whatever my dad was and had been, he’d left a massive hole in our lives.
“Thank you for coming,” Sarah stood up at her position at the top of the table. “This means so much.” Riku was in her arms, looking up into the sky, a blue baseball cap on his head. He was wearing the cutest blue dungarees ever.
Man, Sarah was gonna be an amazing leader. I just knew it.
“Seeing your smiling faces warms my heart,” she added. “This is what life is about. Family. Friends. Love. And birthday presents.”
We all laughed.
It was Riku’s first birthday. Yeah, he’d been proper spoiled.
“I want to raise a toast to these things.”
We toasted.
“And to Hitoshi Murakami, who I know is looking down on us with pride in his heart.”
Sarah knew a different man to me, a Hitoshi I’d never got to fully experience. But I knew he’d loved me in his own, strange way. And I held onto that. It helped me move on, to embrace this new family.
We toasted, and the cake I’d made was brought out. Jam and buttercream filling, sponge, gold piping, and white icing decorated with two gray wolves, their eyes orange. Based on my babies, who I summoned up to be in this moment.
I rubbed their heads, watching Riku eye up the flickering ‘1’ candle with his big, dark eyes.
He giggled and buried his head into his mum’s neck, shyly as we started to sing.
G threw his arm around me and pulled me close.
Moments like these were the best part of life.
Hardcore.

About the Author
Richard Amos is an author from England who is constantly lost in the worlds he writes about, and the ones in the queue yet to be written. He also has more books in his house than anything else and is never without a book (and chocolate) in his hands when he's not writing. He's a proud nerd who loves to dance. Hard.
In a former life, he was definitely a merman.
Richard writes kick-ass Fantasy and Urban Fantasy with gay male protagonists, all with good doses of action, adventure, and romance.
