  PROLOGUE

Ten-year-old Dante was looking out the window from the back of the car’s seat. Rain was pouring down and hitting the glass. He counted the raindrops as they slid down the window as a way for him to pass time. He had just finished doing his homework and now he had to wait with his younger brother for another hour while his mom, Layla, finished working.

He was not completely aware of what his mother did. The only thing that he knew from watching from a distance from inside the car every night was that his mother would always go to the same motel room, and then different men would visit her. After a few minutes, a half hour and sometimes but very rarely, an hour later the men would then exit the room.

Their reactions would vary. Some would leave the room smiling while others would exit the room in a rush hoping that they were not going to get caught by somebody. Then, Layla would take a break afterwards outside of the room, and she always looked exhausted. She only smiled when she was with her children.

For as long as she could, Layla did not want her sons to know what she did for a living. The only thing that mattered to her was having enough money to take care of them. From her heart, she did her best to spoil them as much as she could.

She had purchased a burner phone and had given it to Dante with only two phone numbers to call; her, in case of an emergency, and Vincent, her pimp. To the kids he was known as Layla’s boss and their uncle.

Dante knew not to call while his mother was inside the motel room, and she always texted him how long she was going to take. If the time had passed and she was still inside, he was instructed to call Vincent.

There had never been a night in the last five years where Dante was worried or felt that he needed to call Vincent. Every night had been peaceful, and nothing had gone wrong. But tonight, he noticed that his mother had not come out of the room by the time that she had informed him.

Dante called Vincent. Two rings and then an answer. “Hey little guy, everything okay?”

“My mom is still inside, and she was supposed to have been out a few minutes ago.”

“Is your brother with you?” Vincent asked.

Dante looked at his baby brother. “Yeah, he’s sleeping.”

“Okay, buddy. I need you to stay inside the car, yeah? Your mom is going to be okay. I am on my way right now.”

Vincent was never too far from the women that worked for him. It took him two minutes to get to the motel. He parked next to Layla’s car, in front of the motel room.

He exited his vehicle and glanced at Dante who was looking at him. “Everything is going to be okay. I’ll be right back with your mommy.” He said as loud as he could so that Dante could hear him. Vincent smiled at him when Dante gave him a thumbs up, and then he began to walk towards the door.

He knocked deafeningly. When no one answered after ten seconds, he removed his Walther Q5 Match SF handgun from its holster. Then he took out his master key card from his pocket, which he had obtained a few years ago by paying the motel owner. He unlocked the door and stepped inside the room.

What Vincent saw in front of him was gruesome; a naked Layla was lying down on the bed, and between her legs and on top of her was a man. For a moment, Vincent believed that they were having sex while the man was kissing her neck, but when he looked closer, he realized that he was wrong.

Vincent aimed his gun and pointed it at the back of the man who had made it seemed as if he was not aware of the pimp’s presence. Vincent was starting to hear the munching, slurping, and crunching sounds that the man was making to Layla’s neck.

Upon closer inspection, Vincent noticed that there were blood stains on the bed. He quickly pulled the trigger and shot the vampire’s back five times but it did not stop him. “You bath salt piece of shit!” He grabbed the man by the back of his shirt to pull him back, but the vampire retaliated by swinging his arm and slapping Vincent away, sending him flying across the room.

Vincent hit the back of his head with the wall. He groaned in pain as he aimed his gun once again towards his assailant.

He did not know when it happened or if he was hallucinating because of the hit that his head had just taken, but the vampire was now in front of him.

Vincent looked up to see the vampire’s face; even though the room was dimly lit, he was able to see the creature’s crimson eyes, and then was startled as he noticed the blood that was dripping down the killer’s chin.

“I,” he groaned, “I don’t know what the hell are you,” he aimed the gun at the man who had just killed Layla, “but I’m going to kill you.” The vampire snorted and laughed at this threat.

Vincent pulled the trigger in a rapid succession, and three bullets pierced the vampire’s chest and shoulder. It groaned in pain, but was barely moved by the bullets. All the blood that he had just consumed from Layla had given him an adrenaline rush.

While Vincent sat on the floor in shock, the vampire inserted his index and thumb inside of the bullet entry wounds, and removed each one. “Damn,” the sinister creature said, “It’s been a while since I’ve been shot. I’m going to enjoy killing you.” He dropped the bullets to the ground.

  Police sirens.

“I guess not.” He sounded irritated. He pulled back his hand and then launched a severe blow onto Vincent’s jaw, knocking him out. He then began to walk towards the door and then exited the room.

Vincent was in shock and with the pain that he had suffered, he was unable to move. He was lost for words and did not know how to react. Since childhood he had always been strong-minded, unfazed by anything that should have put fear in his heart. But what had just happened to him had allowed anxiety and panic to invade his mind.

All he wanted was to wake up from this nightmare, but the constant throbbing pain that his headaches were giving him were a reminder of the reality that he was in.

Dante was now outside of the car, holding his baby brother’s hand as he desperately waited for his mom to
come out and tell him that everything was okay. The multiple gunshots that the brothers had heard had scared them, and Dante had been the one to call the police.

When the motel room’s door opened, it was the vampire who came out of the room. He stared at the children with a sinister glare from a distance. No, that’s one of her rules. No kids. He reminded himself.

A Dodge Challenger car decked out with sirens and police decal arrived and it parked next to the brothers. The headlights revealed the pale vampire’s features; a dark and menacing appearance that sent chills to Dante, Klayton, and the two police officers.

“Is that…blood on his chin?” One of the officers, Dean, asked his partner.

“Could be the victim or the shooter. The kids are the only thing that matters right now.” Officer Rayleigh said as they exited the car. They sprinted towards the children, picked them up, and took them behind their car’s door that was left wide open.

“You’re safe. Okay? We will protect you.” Dean assured the children in a calm manner even though deep down, he could not shake the evil feeling that he had felt when he saw the vampire. He then picked up his walkie-talkie and called for backup.

“Stay here,” Rayleigh ordered as he took out his standard issued Glock 17 9MM handgun and aimed it at the unpleasant figure that was still standing there, “Do not move! Get on your knees with your hands behind your head, or I will shoot!”

Not worth my time. I already killed someone tonight. Can’t add a second one, let alone a cop. The vampire ignored Rayleigh, turned around, and began to walk away. He needed to be out of sight in order to sprint or jump at supernatural speed without raising any more alarms.

For the seventh time tonight, the vampire was shot, and this time the bullets hit his back. He was now getting a little bit irritated. He closed his eyes and groaned. The officer questioned himself whether or not he missed.

Now that he was pissed off, he decided to sprint. Rayleigh chased him while Dean stayed behind with the baby brothers. “Hey, it’s okay. My partner is going to take care of him. Were you the one that called us? That was so brave of you.”

“My mom is still inside.” Dante pleaded.

Dean did not want to leave the kids behind, but he could not risk taking them with him either. He decided to put them inside his police cruiser. After he helped them get inside the car, he handed them the key to the car. “Once I close the door, lock it with that button, okay?” He pointed at the lock symbol on his key. He noticed that Klayton had been perfectly still and quiet this whole time “Take care of your little brother. I’m going to go get your mommy, okay?” Dean closed the car’s door, and once he heard the clicking sound of the car being locked, he began to walk towards the motel room.

As soon as he entered the room and scanned it, fear entered his mind. How am I going to tell those little kids outside that their mom is dead? He asked himself as he walked closer to Layla’s lifeless body.

He gasped and covered his mouth. It had only been two weeks since he was sworn in as an officer and this was the first dead body that he had seen.

Vincent was now waking up from the heavy blow that he had received from the vampire. He groaned as he opened his eyes. Remembering what had just happened, he reached for his gun that was on the floor next to him.

Already startled, when Dean heard him, he removed his gun from its holster and aimed it at the pimp. “Don’t move, stop!”

Vincent slowly placed his gun back on the floor “Hey, we are not safe here!” He tried his best to sound as calm as possible so as to not agitate the police officer.

“Stay where you are, please.” And once Vincent nodded and relaxed his posture, Dean picked up his walkie-talkie, “Ray. Ray, come in.”

  Silence.

When he did not get a response, he decided to call his dispatcher, “This is officer Collins.”

  “Go ahead.”

“There is a dead woman on the bed of a motel room where we were sent to investigate. I have one suspect with me, two kids outside, and officer Rayleigh went on a foot chase after another fleeing suspect. We need back up.”

“Ten-four, they’re already on their way. Ray called it in before he stopped responding. They should be there soon.” Dean relaxed, believing that everything was going to be okay.

“Hey,” Vincent groaned as he forced himself up. Out of habit, he had his gun on his hand again. “Please, we can’t wait for your buddies. Your partner may be in danger. That man was not normal, it was as if he was possessed. I can help you!” He wanted to avenge Layla. He wanted to kill the man who had just made two little boys have a life without a father or a mother.

Dean quickly aimed his gun at the pimp. “Last chance! Put your gun down and your hands behind your head. I need to handcuff you. You’re still a suspect.”

“You have to listen to me!” He raised his voice as he was getting pissed off that the officer was not taking him seriously.

“I will shoot.” Dean had never aimed a gun at a person before, never had harmed anyone. But this man was starting to make him feel unsafe.

Vincent took one step closer, “Why won’t you just take me-,”

  The officer shot Vincent.

  TWENTY YEARS LATER

  1

When Klayton opened his eyes, he smiled as he saw that the woman that he had met last night did not leave while he slept.

She was naked under the blankets as she laid on top of him. He wanted to caress her but because he did not want to wake her up, he decided not to. He felt happy and he did not want to risk doing anything to ruin the moment.

As he was considering going back to sleep, she opened her eyes and smiled at him, “Hey.” She said in a sleepy voice that made Klayton adore her more.

“Hi there, sleepyhead. How did you sleep?”

  “Good, and you?”

“Yeah. Perfect.” Klayton was enjoying her soft and naked skin pressed against his. It had been aa long time since he was with a woman.

“What are we having for breakfast?” Her asking this made him happy because she was implying that she wanted to stay a little bit longer with him.

He quickly answered back, “I was thinking just calling in Room Service and having breakfast in bed and be lazy?”

“Yeah. That sounds good to me.”

  “What do you want?”

“Anything, I’m not picky. I’ll be right back.” She kissed and bit his lower lip as he kissed her back. She then got off him and out of the bed, and then walked to the bathroom while Klayton lusted after her with his eyes.

When she closed the bathroom door he picked up the room’s telephone and pressed the In Room Dining extension number.

After he placed the order and then ended the call, the woman came back into the room. She was now only wearing a robe with nothing else underneath. “Do you have somewhere else to be today?” He asked and as soon as he said that, he realized that it could send the wrong message to her, so he added, “Because I don’t and I’m having fun with you.” He wondered if he was being too forward.

“I’m all yours today.” She said as she walked to the bed and laid back down next to him, and while his hand was underneath her lower back, he pulled her as close to him as possible. “Are you always this direct?” She smiled as she ran her hand below his waist line.

They knew that the food was going to be arriving in the next fifteen to twenty minu
tes, so they decided to only caressed and tease each other. While Klayton was massaging her lower lips with his index and middle finger, someone knocked on the door. She smiled as he gave her a kiss and then got up to open the door.

Once they finished their breakfast Klayton placed the plates outside of their hotel room and then after closing the door, he went back on the bed next to her. Am I going to ruin the day when she figures out that I don’t even know her name?

“What’s wrong?” She could see the guilt in his face.

“Last night was awesome and I don’t want you to leave.”

“But?” She did not like that he paused. “Just tell me.”

“I feel like shit, because I don’t remember your name.” At this, she smiled, and he was now confused. “You’re not mad?”

“We never told each other our names, so how could I be mad? We met at the bar and were both in a hurry to get back to your hotel room.

“Oh.” The guilt left his mind.

  “I’m Vanessa.”

“Klayton.” And as he said this they interlocked their legs together and their faces were now inches away from each others. She ran her finger across his muscular chest and then looked at his blue eyes. “Why were you in that bar last night?”

“I just finished my time with the Army. I wanted to clear my head and have some fun before I went back to my real life.”

“And what is your life like that made you not be in a rush to return to it?”

“It’s a life where somebody killed my mom when I was really young.” It was never easy for him to talk about it. No matter how many times he did, or with who. It was just something that he was never going to get used to.
