Sleuth Truth: Mobile Phones
Until the late 1990s, most people made their calls using phones that plugged into the wall and stayed in one place. By the year 2000, however, more and more people were carrying much smaller phones wherever they went.
The first mobile phone, made in 1973, weighed more than 2 pounds! Mobile phones became available to the public in 1983, but few people could afford them. By the mid-1990s, they had become much cheaper, and easier to carry around! Before long, they had excellent cameras, and were able to connect to the Internet. Today, most phones are more like small computers that can make phone calls!
How they work:
When you make a call on a mobile phone, the phone changes the sound of your voice into an electronic signal, and sends it out as radio waves. When someone answers your call, their phone receives the waves and changes them back into the sound of your voice.
