As Christians when we begin to understand the weight and devastation of our past sins, we can have doubts about our ability to live up to God’s standard. We are “only human” after all. But with God, there is always a backup plan. He understands our hesitation, and He has given mercy so that we may have time to change our thoughts and ways without worrying about our pasts. He gives us the Word to study and to learn so that we may go forwards with new thoughts and new actions. Although evil tries to make us stumble, God’s grace allows us to walk around or over the issue, and if we do fall, He is there to accept our repentance and renew the future.
In Meow Matrimony, unintended failures from the past reverberate to affect the future of our two protagonists. While not complicit in the failures, they take on the repercussions, feeling that if they’d changed in some way, the failure wouldn’t have happened. But God has a plan to release their hearts, show that while bad things happen, it doesn’t affect how their future will be.
Do you ever focus on your past failings, allow regret to consume your thoughts? Remember that once God forgives your sins, He forgets them. The past cannot be changed, but the past can affect the future. It is up to you to decide whether that effect will be negative or positive. Learn from your mistakes, but don’t let them define who you are. In Christ you are a new creation. Rejoice in the Truth, always trust God, always hope and always persevere. These are the hallmarks of loving God and loving yourself, and loving your neighbour as yourself.
