The Whispers of the Crows Page 20

by Kyle Alexander Romines

The Connor character became a composite of those two. So often, horror—especially slasher movies—tends to focus on teenage miscreants, or other unsympathetic protagonists. It’s rare that this type of story actually scares me, since I’m not invested in the characters’ outcomes. I thought that by making the protagonist of my story a child, and making the audience care about that character, I could make them feel fear for him. This was a concept I had seen in the fantastic 2010 film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, It, Stranger Things, the Sinister films, and the more lighthearted Goosebumps series of novels I grew up with. As for the result, well, I hope it was to your liking!

I would like to thank everyone who was a part of bringing this book to life. That includes my mother, Pam Romines—who read the book before anyone else—and my father, Robert Romines, for supporting my writing journey. I also want to acknowledge Amanda Melheim, my longtime personal editor, and the team at Sunbury Press—my publisher—especially editor Jennifer Cappello and formatter Crystal Devine. Additionally, I would like to thank Victoria Kidd for her work helping me proofread the final draft. A big thanks goes out to the Cover Collection for a beautiful cover.

As always, thank you for reading. If you enjoyed the story, please let me know by leaving a review on Amazon or Goodreads!
