“Can you wait until two days from now when I have the nice dinner and the champagne’s out, and I get down on one knee like I planned? And you know, not when I’m sitting here half-naked, and my brother’s out there, probably holding your panties?”
My hands shook, and I just looked at him. “Married. Are you asking me to marry you?”
“I’m asking you to wait for me to ask you to marry me.” Devin pinched the bridge of his nose. “Dear God. I really am the worst at this. I told you that I used to be good with words. And then I met you, and I lost the ability to speak.”
“That’s one of the sweetest things you’ve ever said.”
“Yeah, but I’m a fucking idiot. I was going to wait to ask you. Until it was nice. And not now.”
“What did she say?” Caleb said from the other side of the door, and both Devin and I let out a sharp yelp.
“Shut up,” Devin shouted.
“What? I didn’t actually touch the panties. I’m not holding them. Now, did she say yes?”
“He hasn’t really asked yet,” I said, not knowing where the words had come from.
Devin just stared at me. Then, without words, he went down on one knee, and tears filled my eyes.
“Erin, baby. There will always be better ways to do this. Better places to be. But, here in one of the homes that I love being with you in, maybe this is the best place. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to be with you. I want to watch you smile every morning, and I want to hold you in my arms when we go to bed. I want to live this crazy life of ours and try to figure out what happens next. I want you to teach me how to bake cakes and how to decorate. And I want you to make as many package jokes as you want because I know it makes you smile. I just want to be with you. Will you marry me, Erin?”
I tried to say something, but I was too busy choking out a sob to do anything else. I had never thought I would get married again. After all, I’d thought I married the person I was supposed to wed.
But Nicholas was already remarried, living his life. And I didn’t love him.
I loved the man in front of me. With all of my heart.
And so, as I stood there in a towel with the love of my life—the true love of my life—down on one knee in front of me, no ring in his hand yet, and steam fogging up the mirror, I did the only thing I could do.
I lowered my voice, my hands shaking, and said,
“Yes.”
