The passenger door flew open, making her scream again, her hands flailing at Daryl, who threw his own arms out to protect himself.

“Jess! Jess! It’s Daryl!” he shouted.

She stopped her attack, instantly looking out of the side to the parking garage. Screeches emanated from the gloom.

  They knew who you were…

  “Jess! We gotta go!”

She turned the steering wheel to the right and hit the gas.

  CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

  An hour earlier. Biochron headquarters.

Norman Colm looked at the bony claw which doubled as his hand. Blood dripped from it, as it did from the door in front of him. Hours before he was given a glimpse of freedom by… her. She, the one who had ruined his life… his town’s life… had opened the door, just to close it again seconds later.

  Mocking me…

In his rage he had struck out at the barrier between him and revenge, again and again, losing track of time, but it remained no matter how hard he hit it.

He turned, his back sliding down the dimpled surface of the door until he hit the floor. He tried to speak, but his altered vocal chords could only manage hints at what he truly wanted to express. So instead he focused on one word… one name…

  “Jessss….sssss…icccc… aaaa.”

“What—” The human sounding reply jolted through him. Was there someone in the room with him? He scoured the corners, but he was alone. “— do you know of Jessica?” continued the male voice.

He got back up and looked heavenwards. Who was this person, talking inside his head?

  “Answer me…”

“Ruuuiinnnerr!” Colm screamed at the walls.

“And what would you do if you were free?”

  “Kiiilll!”

There was a clunk and click from the door, making him spin around. It swung inwards, making him take a step back. A man or something else stood on the other side of the doorway. Despite the mostly human shaped silhouette, Colm could smell the thing standing just a few feet away was like him. He smiled. “Shhheee… here…”

The man nodded. “Yes. But not anymore.”

Anger was building within Colm. Why be free if he could not find her? Maybe he kill this thing in front of him. He surged forward, but the man was quicker, plunging a needle deep into his neck. He staggered against the door frame, then fell forward into the corridor. Images merged with thoughts, which merged with sounds, a chaos his brain could not cope with. He threw his claws around his head, then it stopped.

He looked at the man. “What did you do to me?”

The man smiled. “I know where she is, now…”

Colm took a step forward. “Don’t play with me, stranger. She needs to die for what she has done!”

“And she will, but you need to bring her to me…”

“How do you know where she is?”

“Oh, we know where she is… We see with all eyes, and hear with all our ears… we are everywhere… we are legion and we are many.”

The former mayor smiled. This would be like when he was in the hills of Rocky Pine with his buddies. This would be a hunt he would enjoy.
