G.E.S.S.: Genetically Engineered Super Soldier Page 20

by Frank Pisauro

  Quest Updated: Savages!

Quest details: All the sentient races of the world have come out of their respective caves. It’s your job to teach them the system. Good luck, they don’t even have languages yet!

●You have taught the Sun Elves the system. One additional life granted (Soul must still be on this plane, along with a piece of the body to resurrect)

  ●Bonus reward: 26,540

You have reached level Nine! Good for you!

That night, as we lay in each other’s arms, I asked, “why don’t you think I’ll like our next assignment?”

“Oh. That,” I felt her body shake with a soundless laugh. “Well, one of us is going to have to be an orc. The other a dwarf. That way we can stop them from both becoming extinct. There aren’t enough of them to survive a conflict against one another.” She told me, without leaving my arms.

I sighed, “let me guess. I’m too tall to be a dwarf.”

“Well… that,” she said with a shrug. “Really, it’s more that you’re good at violence, and that’s what orcs respect.” She informed me. The orcs were the last sentient race to join the alliance. They were fiercely independent and extremely violent in nature. A good number of their race were the same combat instructors who had tortured us Gess throughout our training, before we entered the war. They had quickly come to fear us once we hit the battlefields though.

“Well… I guess it could be worse. Could be the drow.” I shuddered at the thought.

She sighed this time, “no, they will likely be next after that. They’re located not too far from the dwarfs.”

“Fantastic! What the fuck Tabs, why would you bring the sick fucks back for?” I still had nightmares about the queen, and Tabby had decided to bring back those monsters that were responsible for the end of the world. I was having trouble understanding why anyone would even consider bringing the drow back.

It wasn’t all their fault! She read my mind, responding through the mind link. “They were driven deep underground due to hate and bigotry. What the queen found there,” she shook her head. “It drove them mad.” She paused, thinking how to continue. “You killed her. Before you died, what drove them insane was what your friend killed after that.” I paled at that, a chill going through my body, causing goosebumps down my arms. “You should fear that being.” She advised, noticing my reaction. “It’s one of the beings that was powerful before the system came.”

Under the cover of darkness, we made our way out of Marvel the next night, Tabby producing two invisibility cloaks from her bag of holding when I was distracted with transferring leadership of Tigris to Lucas. When I asked ‘how’, then ‘why’, and inevitably ‘what …’, she just replied that she had told me she had tricks up her sleeve and walked away, her form disappearing as she pulled her cloak’s hood up.

As we made our way out the doors, I noticed Lucky resting against the doorframe. I don’t know how he knew, but he was waiting for us. I chose well. I couldn’t help but be proud of him at the thought.

We didn’t stop, there was no moment when we shook hands over a tearful goodbye. Just a nod, one he didn’t even see. And with that, we left Tigris like thieves in the night. Off to our next grand adventure.
