Midnight Princess Page 9

“What are you doing with that?” he shouts, snatching it from his son.

“Dad, relax and give it back.” He holds his hand out, and his father reluctantly gives him the envelope.

Ashton pulls out its contents, laying two photos on the table in front of me. I pick them up, staring at the couple smiling in a wedding photo.

“Who are these people?” I ask.

“These are your parents,” he says simply.

His father stands as he rumbles on about some case they got before the Prestons went on vacation. But I can barely understand them as I zone out, admiring the carefree smiles on my possible parents’ faces. They just look so… happy.

If this is my father, he absolutely made the right choice in not choosing the woman that falsely raised me as her daughter, which means the grandparents I loved so dearly are not really my family either. I can’t help but wonder how much they knew or what lies they were told. Either way, I would rather believe they are innocent bystanders to my mother’s treachery.

“How do you know?” I whisper but loud enough to break up their banter.

Ashton hands me a photo of a rose-like birthmark on the woman’s back. The same one that is on my ankle. My birthmark that I’ve always considered one of my imperfections is actually my way home.

Just then, the doorbell rings, but nobody moves to answer it. I always forget they have Doris here. Suddenly, the man and woman from the photo appear in the living room. They stand there, hand in hand, as Ashton moves out of the way. I stand to walk over to them. They smile, though sobbing, at having recognized the same look in my eye that I saw in my real mother’s eyes as soon as I saw that picture. That deep brown-eyed stare that takes hold and never lets go. And that’s just what I did. I ran up to them and held them as long as they allowed.

Now, this is home. Having a real family, somewhat extended now, and the man of my dreams to hold my hand and never let it go. That’s what I call a fairy-tale ending.
