He grinned and opened the door. “Come find out.”
I smiled like a loon as I approached him and started following him down the stairs.
I hadn’t even made it off the last step when the doorbell rang.
“Dang it,” I grumbled.
“Rain check.” He chuckled. “You’ll want to get that.”
I jogged back up the stairs and pulled the door open to find a woman standing on the stoop. Her red bob styled cropped wavy hair swayed as her green eyes sparkled.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Are you Tess?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“I’m Georgia, but seeing as how we’re kin, you can call me Gator. That’s what my friends call me,” she said, shoving her way through the door. She shifted the military bag farther up her shoulder as she turned to stare at me. Her gaze traveled down my body and back up to my face. “I don’t see the resemblance.”
I shrugged and lifted my brow, crossing my arms over my chest. “Maybe the only thing we share is the same attitude.”
A smile split her lip. “I’d have to agree. So where am I bunking?”
I grinned. “I have the perfect room for you. Go up the stairs and take the third door on the left. It’s labeled the Doll Room.”
I smiled to myself as I headed into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and returned to the porch swing to read my letter from the attorney. I slid my finger under the flap and dumped out the contents. A checkbook and ATM card dropped out, along with a photo. I don’t know how long I stared at it. It was a picture of my mother and the sperm donor. He was crouched on his knees in front of her with his hands resting on my mother’s prego belly while he kissed it.
I dropped the picture into my lap and unfolded the letter. This letter wasn’t in the attorney’s handwriting. It was signed by Mildred herself.
My dearest Contessa,
If you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve proved yourself as my eldest granddaughter to have the heart of a fierce dragon. The enclosed picture is of your father, Alexander. In this picture Alexander wasn’t just kissing you through your mother’s belly. He was casting a protection spell. Your father didn’t abandon you like you probably believe. He loved both of you so much that he let you and your mother go, so that you could live.
Stay safe, my granddaughter, and keep your sisters safe too. There are those in the world that believe the Hexford line of witches should be exterminated. That can never be for reasons that will become apparent. So stay vigilant, Tess, and know that I am guiding you with love and light even from the grave.
Your grandmother,
Mildred Hexford
The door swung open with a force that startled me. Georgia stared at me with narrowed eyes and looked ready for a fight. “There is no way in hell I’m sleeping in that doll room.”
I grinned. “That’s okay, Gator, you can have mine. I’m moving to the attic.”
The End.
