Bill jerked upright. ‘He did what?’

‘I don’t know what he wanted it for, but I also learned he’s biding his time for something else.’

Bill knew the man couldn’t be trusted.

He looked at her, clutching the sheet to her naked body. ‘I met with him a few hours ago. He demanded more clinics and staff to run his current one.’

Laura’s eyes widened. ‘I assume you stalled him?’

He’d missed this, having someone who knew him so well. ‘I did, but he wasn’t happy about it. He wants me to meet his new demands now.’

Laura frowned at her lap. ‘Maybe we need him.’ She looked at Bill. ‘We might need to continue trials in genetics to prevent issues like this from happening again.’

  ‘Yeah, probably.’

But could a different doctor do it?

‘How did you find the cure so fast?’ she asked.

‘Greyson found files from old experiments done to record the frequency used to enable brain-to-brain communication. The virus spread faster when a certain frequency was in use.’

She frowned again. ‘Files like those would be too big to transfer over the Wave as it is. So how did you get them?’

He paused. ‘I had to reinstate the interstellar wave.’

Her eyes widened and she pulled back. ‘What? For how long?’

  ‘A minute.’

‘Anyone could have downloaded anything, hacked the system.’

  ‘I know, love, but I didn’t have a choice.’

She sighed, which he took as a sign of her agreement. ‘Well, our first order of business is increasing the surveillance on that damn halfway house, and Harvey. Our second is deciding what to do with the ITF and the outdated peace treaty. Half of Stephen’s district left because of it. We need to discuss a new order for this world that includes the Indigenes.’

The thought had occurred to him. ‘I’ve given it some thought, but I honestly don’t see how that will work, not when there’s mistrust on both sides.’

‘It’s better than what’s happening now. Both sides want a voice. Let’s give it to them.’

He agreed with that. Bill pulled Laura close and nuzzled her neck.

The overhead light dipped suddenly. An alarm on the Light Box screamed from the other room.

Bill pulled back. ‘What the hell...?’

Laura bolted from the bed and picked up her clothes from the floor.

He copied her and entered the living room, pulling on his trousers.

  ‘What’s going on?’

The Light Box continued to scream. A message on the holographic front said: “Switch to emergency power.”

Laura rushed over to the window. Bill heard other alarms sounding in the distance. The time of day made it impossible to know if this was a blackout.

A bad feeling hit him. ‘The last time a power issue like this happened, it was the GS humans and their machine.’

Laura looked back at him, concern on her face. ‘I don’t like coincidences, Bill.’

  ‘Neither do I.’

The equipment Bill had brought in to accommodate Laura’s brief stay was still on the dining table. She ignored it and grabbed her DPad from her bag. He got his. The DPads operated off their own infinite supply of power.

Bill called the office. ‘Julie, what’s happening?’

‘The power’s down. We’re flying blind. Security is down here.’

‘Lock the doors manually to be safe. I’m on my way there.’

  ‘Okay.’ She clicked off.

He glanced at Laura. She was checking with the other ITFs. ‘Power’s down there too.’

‘Shit.’ Another call came through; this one was from Ben’s landlady, Mrs Hegarty. Her face filled the screen. ‘Bill, the boy never came home last night. I’m worried. He’s wandered off before but never stayed out all night.’

Fear gripped him, but he smiled at Mrs Hegarty. ‘He’s probably sleeping at a friend’s. Don’t worry, I’ll find him.’

He ended the call and dialled Jameson’s number next, but got no answer.

‘We need to go,’ he said to Laura. Bill dropped his DPad into his bag, but not before he called his car.

He and Laura jumped in and the car drove them to the compound. The gates were wide open and there were no guards on duty.

‘What happened here?’ asked Laura. ‘Should we check the hospital?’

‘No, I have a feeling I know what’s going on.’

He jumped out before the car came to a stop. Dread filled him as he raced to the biodome at the back of the hospital. The door was ajar. Inside the dome, several guards lay unconscious. Ahead of him, the door to the prison cell made of glass was wide open.

Marcus Murphy was gone. Ben was missing.

All signs pointed to Harvey Buchanan.

  Word from the Author

Book seven and counting. 2020 has been a strange year. Lockdown and masks are the buzzwords of the year and most of us have had our lives upended. But one thing that’s been a constant throughout this pandemic: books.

While we figure out how to move forward, let’s remember the good things about this year. Events have slowed our lives down and reminded us of what’s important. Nothing changed, except for us. The world carried on while we hunkered down with new routines and Netflix. Nature frolicked in the empty spaces void of human life. This pause is a stark reminder that the world will not miss us if we all vanished tomorrow. In fact, it would thrive. When this is all over, I hope we will take better care of each other, of ourselves, and of this planet.

Thank you to Kathryn, my main beta reader for this series. You have been a constant supporter, and for that I’m grateful.

Thanks to Sara for editing this book. You are da bomb! And to Deranged Doctor Design for reigniting my passion for this series through the emotive covers.

And to you, reader, for sticking with this series. I love the twists and turns the story keeps taking! I hope you do, too. If you enjoyed this book, please leave a review. I would be most grateful. Thank you x

  About the Author

Eliza Green tried her hand at fashion designing, massage, painting, and even ghost hunting, before finding her love of writing. She often wonders if her desire to change the ending of a particular glittery vampire story steered her in that direction (it did). After earning her degree in marketing, Eliza went on to work in everything but marketing, but swears she uses it in everyday life, or so she tells her bank manager.

Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, she lives there with her sci-fi loving, evil genius best friend. When not working on her next amazing science fiction adventure, you can find her reading, indulging in new food at an amazing restaurant or simply singing along to something with a half decent beat.
