Jetta rested her head on his shoulder. She didn’t know what to say.
“Okay, you’re right,” Jahx said, hearing her inner voice. He put his arm around her and squeezed. “This is a good day. And we will have this moment forever.”
“Well then, if that’s the case,” Jetta said, reaching into her pocket and producing the rock dice. “How about we make this ‘forever moment’ me beating you in an all-or-nothing game?”
“I thought we had to get back home?”
Jetta winked. “Don’t chicken out. It’s just one game. Come on—I’ll give you first roll.”
Jahx hesitated. At first Jetta mistook it for lack of interest. Then she realized he was close to crying. Looking into his blue eyes, she saw his awareness that this moment would not last forever, despite how his heart ached for its permanence.
“Please tell me we’re not too old to play games,” she said, nudging him and handing him the dice.
Silently she whispered, We will always have this love, and we will always have each other.
Jahx wiped his eyes, and with a smile that transformed his face, he rolled the dice.
Coming Soon!
The message was in full text, no recording. Now I see. I am burning.
Jetta inhaled sharply. Something sang across the psionic plane, a keening, animal cry of pain, but it was gone as soon as it came.
Jahx—something awful is happening! Jetta screamed across their connection.
She stopped in the hall and fell to her knees.
Now I see. I am burning.
Jetta clutched her stomach. “No—NO! Impossible!”
She opened her eyes to the white flames of a different world, and the shrieks and whispers of her oldest and fiercest enemy.
