Marjorie groaned. “I really misjudged you, Elise. I’m starting to think I’m not so good at my job.”

Adrien paused in the kitchen, glanced around, and most likely realized that everyone had witnessed that scene. He sighed, his shoulders dropping. River hid her laughter behind a cookie.

“Don’t worry,” Adrien said to Raven. “I’m not going to use you as a shield. I don’t know what I was thinking when I said that.”

River nudged her sister, but Raven was an immovable object. She just smiled and nodded. Adrien raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

River liked to think that the clans would keep uniting one after another. She hoped that the love that mate bonds could form would force out the hatred the feud had started years ago. Perhaps that was a romantic thought, but she wasn’t about to knock it. Eventually, all the Barnes and Montoya shifters would find love.

Who would be next? Would Raven and Adrien fall for one another? River tried to imagine who her brother would fall for, but if that fool wasn’t up in the aviary, then he was causing trouble at home. He wasn’t the kind of man to give himself over to anyone else the way that Jensen had.

Jensen loved deeply. So deeply that River could feel it even from across the room. His gaze warmed her skin, turning her molten hot. She nodded her head toward the nearby staircase. Jensen’s eyes widened. He grinned and set down his plate so he could make his way toward the stairs.

River waited a moment before following him, though everyone likely noted their absence. The last thing River heard was Marjorie, charming Raven with a plate of double chocolate cookies before River shut the door behind her.

Jensen pulled her into his embrace, his mouth already on hers. The rest of the world fell away until there was only them.

“You are everything I never thought I would have,” River whispered against his lips as she clung to his shirt.

He smiled and rested his forehead against hers. “And you are everything I have ever needed.”
