Themba openly gaped at his brother. Payton held onto his arms. Unsure of what was transpiring. Whatever it was had taken Themba by surprise.

Melisizwe snapped his fingers. “Come here, Jack. You are most interesting.”

Payton thought Jack wouldn’t move, but he got up and made his way to Melisizwe, head down and unsure. He didn’t want to go, but even Payton felt the power behind Melisizwe’s command.

At Melisizwe’s feet, Jack sat and Melisizwe pet the top of his head and scrubbed behind his ears. Jack’s tail wagged, and Payton knew he was fine.

She turned to whisper to Themba. “Wh-what does this all mean?”

“It means that your quiet period is over.” Melisizwe tilted his head to the side. “I believe I read that humans call it a ‘honeymoon.’” He smiled again. “We’ve all been learning about humans and your ways. I want you to be comfortable here in your new home, sister.”

Payton’s knees almost buckled. Themba held her firm.

Sister. And just like that she was in Themba’s family? No, looking down on her because she was human? No snide comments about her family or how she’d grown up? No...trying?

She pulled her trembling lip between her teeth.

“We would’ve liked to have learned about all humans in general, but our focus has been on North American humans,” Huson offered. “Intriguing species. Many of us have questions that we couldn’t find the answers for in the files. I’ve sent them over to Maynara.”

“I won’t bother you with all those questions now,” Maynara said. “Once we hire your personal assistant, you can work with her to answer them.”

“I’m still so very confused by all of this,” Themba said. “I thought...”

Maynara leaned over to Huson. “He thought he got rid of me.” Huson snorted out a laugh.

Themba gave Maynara a confused look. “But you just told me that you had a new assignment.”

Maynara chuckled. “I told you my boss was stubborn.” She gestured toward him. “You’re as stubborn as it gets.”

Themba straightened his shoulders and raised his chin. “The decision to come back will be up to Payton. She’s not used to any of this, and I don’t want to overwhelm her.” Themba turned toward Payton. “Do you need to take some time to think about this? We can take all the time you need.”

Really? He had to ask if she wanted to live in a small house or a palace? Her only concern would be how to muffle the sounds of their lovemaking. With just the two of them in the house, there was no need to bite the pillows. She yelled out at will.

“W-will we have a neighbor in the room next to ours?”

“We have the entire East wing. There won’t be any neighbors that could possibly hear anything coming from our suites.” He caught on quickly to her concern.

She furrowed her brow in confusion. “East wing?”

He gave her a loving smile and turned her to face the window again. He pointed to the building off to the right that looked as though it spanned a football field. “That’s the East wing.”

Payton’s mouth dropped open. “That’s where we’ll live?”

“It’s up to you, my Nkosazana.”

She turned to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. “What does nkosazana mean?”

  “It means princess.”

She smiled. “The translator picked that word up perfectly. I just wanted to hear you say it. I want you to be happy, Themba. Of course, we can live here with your family.”

He pulled her tighter and squeezed her to him. “My nkosazana, you are my family. I would follow you to the ends of the universe.”
