Alf laila wa laila (The Thousand and One Nights). Many editions. The least unsatisfactory, Cairo, 1969. (Translator’s note: There appears to be no recent English translation of The Thousand and One Nights. Our nineteenth-century ones are often marred by a prudish desire to protect the reader’s susceptibilities. The Preface (1906) to Lane’s Everyman’s Library Version declares quite unshamefacedly: ‘With regard to the omissions. Lane’s translation is intended for the general public of both sexes, and it was absolutely necessary to excise a number of words, phrases, and passages on the score of decency. Even a few complete tales had to be omitted, because they could not be purified without destruction.’ Clearly, such a version would be of little use as a reference for a book on Islam and sexuality! The most recent and, to my mind, best version is Mathers’ retranslation of Mardrus’s French translation: The Thousand and One Nights, trans. Powys Mathers, in 4 vols. London, Folio Society, 1958.)
