“Something’s wrong,” she told him, knowing that her breathing was erratic and that perspiration glistened on her forehead and upper lip. “It’s coming fast. Too fast.”

“Sometimes babies do,” he crooned, smoothing a comforting hand over her hair. He did a quick check and grinned up at her. “The baby’s head is crowning. I see lots of silky dark hair.”

“I can’t give birth on the kitchen floor!”

He was so calm, drat him. She was a nurse. She should be calm, too. She’d read all the books, attended birthing classes. She was prepared.

But not for this, she decided as she was wracked with yet another colossal contraction.

“Dakota,” she panted, “this can’t be happening… first deliveries are supposed to take hours.”

Her husband chuckled. “Some women would call you lucky.” Then he ordered, “Focus on your breathing. Look at me.”

She did as he bid, gazing into his wonderful eyes. One more mind-blowing pain brought her son into the world, and it wasn’t too much longer before she was nestled in the comfort of her bed, cradling her baby boy in her arms.

“He’s beautiful,” Dakota whispered. “He looks just like you.”

Lyssa could only smile. She was overjoyed to be holding this child she’d waited for and anticipated for months.

“What are we going to call him?” Dakota smoothed his fingertips down the baby’s nose and chin, and he was rewarded when his son’s little bow-shaped mouth pursed.

Before Lyssa could answer, Dakota suggested, “How about Lucky?” He chuckled. “That’s it! Lucky Snowstorm Makwa.”

Even though she knew he was teasing, she clicked her tongue in chastisement. “Lucky is what you name your favorite beagle, not your baby boy.” Then she looked up into his moss-green eyes, shyly adding, “I was thinking of naming him Grayson. Do you think your grandfather would mind?’ ’

“Mind? I think Grandfather will be in heaven!” He leaned over and kissed her lips, and Lyssa felt warmed through with the feeling of being loved. She watched Dakota plant a gentle kiss on their son’s fuzzy dark head and she knew the true meaning of honest-to-goodness contentment.

  THE END

Although the books in this series are stand-alone novels, reading the books in order will offer the most enjoyable experience. Titles in The Black Bear Brothers Series:

  Healing Chay, Book 3

Page forward for a note from the author.

  A Note From The Author

  Dear Reader,

When I first began writing Woman of His Heart, Dakota’s problem felt a little farfetched to me—a man too handsome to remain single? Ha! But then it seemed that every day there was another story on the news about sexual harassment, and it quickly became clear to me how one hint of gossip could easily ruin a doctor’s reputation. Suddenly, Dakota’s situation didn’t seem so outlandish, after all. And I felt his willingness to help Lyssa out with her problem only made him more appealing.

I hope you enjoyed Woman of His Heart. If you did, please consider leaving a short review. And please tell a friend! Nothing helps an author more than word-of-mouth recommendations.

The Black Bear Brothers series has 2 more books:

Mat’s story: An Honorable Man, Book 1

Chay’s story: Healing Chay, Book 3

Both books are available as e-books and as paperbacks. I’d be honored if you would look for them.

  All my best,

  Donna Fasano
