It must be nice to finally be able to live a normal life. The cops have stopped hunting for her too, because they were searching for Lily the entire time, not knowing that her and Kora were both the same person.
I’ve given more statements than I can count, but I won’t give her up, because I know one day soon, we’ll run into each other again.
“Jackson! Didn’t you hear the horn blast? It’s lunchtime!”
I raise an eyebrow as I glance over at the foreman, then give him a grin and shrug.
I run a hand back through my sweat-slicked hair as I make my way into the building. I’m not really hungry; I haven’t been in a long time, but at the very least I can wash up some before it’s time to get to work.
“Sorry,” I call out to him as I walk by.
“You okay, Devyn? You don’t look so hot.”
“I’ll be fine as soon as I get out of the sun,” I reassure him with a thumbs-up.
Heading down the hallway, I maneuver around the bustling crowd of people inside, and walk straight for the bathroom.
I shut the door behind me, turning the lock to make sure no one can walk in.
Turning on the faucet, I reach down and splash some of the cool water against my face. I can’t get my damn body temperature to regulate, no matter what I do, but I’m starting to get used to it.
I stand up straight, grip the sides of the sink tightly, and stretch backward.
I used to be able to listen to the melody of my sore bones popping gently whenever I did this.
With a sigh, I straighten myself out and look into the mirror, but I can’t seem to stop shaking.
It’s hotter in here than it was outside, and the whispers are starting to get louder.
That’s all I can really seem to hear these days, everything else is slightly muted.
Is that because of what happened?
It’s not so easy to hear much of anything anymore, but I can see just fine.
I’ve always been able to.
My vision only got better after the exorcism.
Now that both of my pupils are enlarged, that is.
I can see everything that others can’t.
I know who the sinners are.
And the reason I know this, is because the vile spirits are now swimming inside of my body.
That was the trade.
My soul for Kora’s.
I’m a house of evil, unmitigated malevolence.
And I’ll stay this way until it’s my time to be saved.
