Divided Sky Page 28

MacLean’s mustache curled up. “Saw the old man at his house earlier today. Shit, I thought I was in bad shape. That guy’s a mess.” He straightened and pulled the blankets tight around his shoulders. “We made a pact. We’re going to survive. We even made a fishing date—June seventeenth, next year.”

An inhale shook in MacLean’s chest.

Wolf looked toward the house. Bonnie MacLean stood in the window of his kitchen looking out. She turned and disappeared back inside.

“I want you to promise me something,” MacLean said.

  “What’s that?”

“Take care of her if I don’t make it. I mean, she’s a strong woman and can take care of herself. Just…make sure she remembers that.”

Wolf nodded. “Of course. I promise.”

MacLean nodded, and then he tilted his face to the sky. “You head back in. I think I’ll stay out here with the stars. And can you send Bonnie out? I think we’ll sneak around the house and go quietly.”

  Wolf stood up. “Sure thing.”

  “See ya.”

Wolf squeezed his shoulder. He tried to come up with something profound to say but drew a blank. “Later, old man,” he said, and he turned to walk across the lawn towards the kitchen.

  “June seventeenth!” MacLean yelled.

  He stopped and turned around.

MacLean was standing, almost invisible in the darkness beyond the house’s glow. “You mark that day on the calendar. I’ll come see you too. If I’m not there in person, I’ll be there in spirit. If you feel a sudden urge to go to the bathroom, that’s me working my magic.”

Wolf laughed. “I’ll look forward to seeing you in person, then.”

They waved at one another, and MacLean sat back down, disappearing into the darkness.

Wolf turned back to the house. He paused at the door, and then he stepped through, back into the melody of a bluegrass song.
