“Nay, Timothy,” she replied. “It is you who does not understand me. Alex taught me to be brave, and he showed me how I can trust again. For all those reasons, and more, I love him.”
But Timothy only shook his head. “You cannot want to stay with him,” he said. “The marriage was an arrangement. Surely you want other things…?” And he began to draw Aileen closer to him, leaning in for a kiss.
“What is going on here?” a voice interrupted them.
It was Lena.
“Nothing, Lena,” said Aileen firmly. “Timothy here was just mistaken about something. Very sorely mistaken.”
“No, I’m not,” said Timothy.
Then Timothy bent forward and kissed Aileen.
He was rough, and she immediately pushed him away. However, when she looked up, Alex was standing right there.
Aileen gasped and swiped at her mouth. “Alex,” she gasped.
Alex looked from Timothy to Aileen, the hurt and betrayal apparent in his eyes.
“My lady…” he whispered. “Have you chosen him?”
The pain in his voice made Aileen’s heart break. “Of course not,” she said, giving Timothy a final push. “He forced it.”
The look in Alex’s eyes changed from hurt to anger in a blink of an eye. He strode over to Timothy, then slugged him across the chin. Timothy went down, and Aileen heard Lena gasp.
But Timothy launched himself at Alex. Soon, they were tussling and fighting in the grass, fists flying. They were moving closer to the edge of the cliffs, not paying attention to the imminent danger.
“Stop it!” cried Lena, as she tried to pull Timothy away from Alex. She knew that Alex could kill Timothy in a rage, and she did not want this idiot to die over a kiss.
However, just as Alex went to push Timothy one last time, his huge hands landed on Lena and pushed her instead.
Her body flew over the cliff’s edge.
“Lena!” screamed Aileen. “Lena!!”
