Small Town Big Man Page 10

“You’re so tight, Laney,” he said, already fucking me quickly. We were both on the edge, both so close. “Your pussy was made just for me.”

My ankles hooked around his back and I urged him on with my feet. Begging him to go harder, faster, at a relentless pace that I knew would have him coming in seconds. His face was red, a vein in his forehead bulging. “Fuck,” he said. “I’m so close.” And ever the gentleman and sex-god, he slipped his hand between us and fingered my clit. Up and down he rubbed it as he fucked me, and I felt the entire world coalescing in that one little spot. Everything inside me tightened and the world got hazy until I was careening into perfect bliss. And when Anders felt me coming and heard my cry, he let himself go, shooting hot jets of cum deep inside me.

Lying on our backs, panting, Anders asked me to hand him a tissue from the nightstand. I rolled over and found a velvet box siting there. I picked it up with trembling hands. “Anders,” I said, my voice breaking, “I really hope you don’t have a rule about women crying after you’ve fucked them.”

He wrapped an arm around me and took the box from my hand. “Generally I try to avoid that, too,” he said with a wink, “but in this circumstance, I can make an exception. Laney, I love you. You are my world. And every day since I met you, it’s harder to imagine living without you.” He slipped the ring on my finger. It fit perfectly. “So what do you say, Laney? Will you be my wife? Will you be by my side always?”

  And I said I would.

Living in the mountains is so much different than the city, but I wouldn't change it for the world. The summers are perfect, hot during the day and cool at night. Anders helped me build garden beds, and when I’m not working on my illustrations, I’m planting or harvesting. The dead of winter is harsh, and the seclusion of being so far away might not be for everyone, but I've fallen in love with the silence and peace. Anders and I snowshoe around the property, and when we get a fire going and open a bottle of wine on a snowy night, there’s no place I’d rather be in the world.

We had a small wedding a few months after he proposed. Just us at the courthouse. But since I’ve come into Anders’s life, he’s rejoined the town’s life, and there was no way we could stop Candice from throwing us a reception at the Bear Claw. Afterall, she told us, that’s where it all began. So with old friends and new, we toasted to our future and feasted on gumbo and cornbread.

Climbing out of bed, I walk down to the living room. There are still some red embers burning in the wood stove, so I throw a couple of fresh logs in to get it going again. Rubbing the outside of my arms, I look out the window and watch the snow as it falls.

It's the first snowfall of the season. Up here it snows late in the spring and starts early in the fall. That's the beauty of the mountains.

When the fire is roaring again, I grab a quick drink of water and head back up to bed. Covering us back up with the blanket, I snuggle up to his side, curling myself around him as best as I can. I love how warm he always is. He's my own personal furnace.

Closing my eyes, I try to fall back asleep when I'm hit with a twinge of pain.

Shit... What the hell was that?

The pain is quick, just a little cramp that causes my belly to clench. Except now, I'm really wide awake, unsure if this is normal or if I should be concerned. I wait a few more minutes, then write off the cramp as nothing.

Attempting to go back to sleep, I position myself around Anders again, only to get struck with another jolt of pain as it zips through my stomach.

It can't be time yet. No way. I still have two weeks left.

My stomach tightens and cramps again, and this time I feel a wetness between my legs that wasn't there before. Instinct kicks in and I just know in my gut that these pains are different.

  It's time; it's definitely time.

Sitting up on my elbow, I gently shake him. “Anders,” I say, kissing his cheek. “Anders, wake up.” I kiss him again on his forehead as I give him another shake.

He grumbles slightly as he starts to stir. With a hand on his chest, I shake him harder. “Anders,” I say, my voice more forceful and demanding.

He pops up in bed, his eyes wide, panic running down his face as he focuses on me. “Are you all right? What's wrong?” He rubs his eyes as he blinks rapidly and scrunches his brows into the bridge of his nose. “What's happening?”

  “I think it's time.”

“Time for what?” he asks, relaxing back into the pillow.

“Time to call the midwife.” My voice is low as I watch the realization of what I'm saying sink in.

Anders grins as he jumps out of bed and starts to tug on his pants. “I've got her on speed dial. You ready?”

“Hold on, hold on. Let’s call her first and see what she says.”

“But it's time, you said it's time. We should go.”

“Anders, babe, let’s call her first. Giving birth can take hours. She might not want us to go until the contractions are so many minutes apart.” Another one hits me at the same time, and I grab my belly.

He rushes to my side, rubbing my back as he fumbles with his phone. “Loren, it's Anders. It's time. The baby is coming and he's coming today.”

He scoops me into his arms once he's off the phone and starts to carry me down the stairs. “Anders, what are you doing?”

  “We're going to the hospital.”

“But why are you carrying me?”

He slows to a stop, and starts to laugh. Gently, he places me back on my feet. “I'm getting a little carried away, huh?”

“Yeah, just a little.” Gripping his arm, I give him a loving smile. “I'm fine. We don't need to rush or freak out. I just need the hospital bag, and some shoes, maybe some clothes and a jacket. . .”

“You know what?” he says, laughing, running his hand through his beard. “I think I’m going to let you take the lead for a minute. You’re obviously the clearer headed one between the two of us.”

So we climb back upstairs and get dressed, only pausing when a contraction sweeps over me. Ten minutes later we’re back downstairs. A backpack hangs off Anders’s shoulder, a baby bag is dangling off his forearm as he stops in the center of the room. “Better?” he asks, glancing around. “Am I forgetting anything?”

“No, I think you got it all. Now let’s go have this baby.”

The light in his eyes is enough to make me melt. He's a proud man. And he's going to be an even prouder father.

Our son is lucky, and so am I.

Who knew love would find me when I least expected it?
