Okay, Kesi thrust the frightening thoughts away. Her brain already hurt so much. She asked, “But- but, what would we do there?”

“Well, you would actually be acting sort of like police officers. You know, checking out petit thefts and shoplifting, stuff like that. However, there is some oddity going on out there, there’ve been vague reports of, well,” his eyes flicked away from hers as he said, “entire towns disappearing.”

  “What? How can-”

“Anyway, you agents are really being sent out there to keep an eye out to look for anything suspicious. Might be some of those aliens fucking around. There have been two different species sighted. They may have some involvement in the disappearances. You and the rest of your misfit team, Christopher Carpenter, Richard Valsaint and Jersey Gerard, will go.”

Kesi’s anxious voice rose stridently. “But we aren’t police officers, we are FBI agents-”

“Listen here, Jasmari, calm down.” He leaned forward, glaring at her. “You fucked up, you guys need experience and need to get the hell out of the public eye, and the Bureau’s. You just keep your eyes and ears open, take notes, do not, I repeat, do not engage and create another catastrophe.”

Never knowing where to settle his hands, he smoothed his palms over his slacks, then forked the knobby fingers through his short dark hair. “It’s for the best. All the way around. You’ll see.” He patted her arm not noticing her face crease in pain from his touch.

“At least you’re alive, can’t say as much for poor Carswell. You’re lucky, you missed the funeral. Hell, it was long and boring and his young wife crying and carrying on, you-”

Speaking of pain, the intensity was creeping up, her entire body burned as if on fire. She cried through the excruciating suffering, “Agent Dukes, please, God I can’t bear it,” she shrieked hoarsely, “get the nurse!”

Quickly getting to his feet, thankful to get out of there, he said with awkwardly cheerful reassurance, “Yeah, sure, you’ll see, it will all be for the-”

The torment roared out of her throat into racking hoarse screams.

He scurried out as fast as he could.
