“A real, live mermaid,” Remy says, leaning over the rail. “Hey, beautiful! Where did you come from? I’ve been fishing these waters for years and never caught a mermaid.”
The woman smiles sweetly and gazes up at Remy as if he’s the most fascinating man in the world. “Who says you’ve caught me?” she asks in a throaty voice.
I mash my shoulder into Tate’s, and he slips an arm around me. We watch his brother’s eyes—and grin—grow bigger. He leans over a few more inches.
“I think your brother has found his person,” I murmur, jabbing my fiancé in the ribs.
The mermaid extends her hand upward to Remy, and he tilts forward even more, almost at a ninety degree angle. “I’d love to catch you,” he murmurs.
She beckons with her index finger. “Come and try.”
“I love a challenge,” he says.
Tate puts his mouth to my ear. “This is going to be good. You’re going to see my brother in action. Did I mention that he’s known as the Playboy of Paradise Beach?”
I snort-laugh a little too loud, but neither Remy nor the mermaid even notice, they’re too busy staring at each other.
Remy hoists himself up on the side of the boat, probably intending to flex and show off his arm muscles. But when the woman laughs, his hands slip. He becomes so flustered that he topples overboard, splashing into the turquoise-colored water.
