“If that’s what you want, then you know I’d do it in a heartbeat.” He’s so serious all of a sudden. So serious, and very, very pale. I think I’ve scared the life out of him.
“We have lots of time to talk about marriage.” I set my hand over his. “We can elope or wait and do it the old-fashioned way or never do it. However it happens, I’m yours. I’m never going anywhere. You’re unfortunately stuck with me for life, you poor man. Me and my car. Which, by the way, you’ve completely commandeered.”
“I didn’t hear any complaints when you bought something different for yourself.”
“You’re right.”
Okay, so I’m not perfect. I still have those moments of insecurity. Sometimes I’m still that lost little girl deep down inside. I still like my spa dates. I still keep my waxing appointments faithfully. I still love pink. Rin and Cassie are still my BFFs for life. I bet some people out there still think I’m a pretty frigid bitch. But that’s okay. I’ve sprinkled a little peace on the parts of my life that needed it and learned to be happy with who I am. The people who know me, know the real me, and the real me is pretty dang happy with where I’m at most of the time. I might even be tolerable on most days.
“Being stuck with you isn’t so bad.” Lucas picks me up in a sweeping move. He whirls me around the room in his arms before he collapses on top of me in the middle of our king-sized bed and in between six different suitcases.
“This coming from a man who thought eating gas station sushi was a good idea.”
“You’re never going to let me live that down, are you?” he groans against my lips.
“Nope.” I kiss him deeply as a sort of apology.
“I’ll prove it to you then, that my judgment has considerably improved since that day. I’m much pickier about my meals now.” He starts edging up the skirt of my pink sundress.
“Well…” I glance at the clock on the nightstand. “We have fifty minutes until we have to be at the airport. Which leaves us about ten minutes to get out the door.”
“We’re budgeting extra time to cry and hug everyone who comes to see us off.”
“So, we might actually have fifteen?” I raise a brow suggestively.
“Yes. Fifteen.”
I wriggle underneath him. “Let’s see what you can do with fifteen minutes. Although I think it might be fourteen now. Better get busy.”
He does. Get busy. For fourteen minutes exactly, Lucas proves to me just how talented his hands, tongue, and, er—other body parts are. And no. I’m not talking about his toes. Although, if hard-pressed, he could probably do some incredible things with those too. The man is incredibly dextrous.
When we’re both rumpled and sweaty and in need of a change of clothing which will have to happen fast, Lucas takes the extra seconds to pull me into his arms and brush a tender kiss across my lips. A kiss that says it all. This is one of those moments—and we’ve had a few before—where it feels like our entire lives are tangled up together. Our past, present, and future.
What can I say? I always knew he needed me. The gas station sushi is proof of it. I’m kidding. But I can say it with certainty because I always knew I needed him too. We needed each other, and now we’re here. Together.
We’re heading off to live our dreams. To make a difference. It might have taken us a while to get on the road we’re walking together, but now, we’re walking it hand in hand.
