Awakening Page 16

Then I bit the bullet and called my parents. I deliberately called the landline, I didn’t want to risk a video chat.

  “Hello?” my Dad answered.

  “Hi Dad, it’s me.”

“Ame! Let me put you on speakerphone, we’ve been so worried,” I heard him pressing buttons and then my Mum’s voice came over the phone.

  “Hi Ame, how are you?”

  “Fine Mum, I’m OK.”

“We’ve seen the news, did you really fight a dragon?”

“No Mum, I was just there when the dragon woke up,” that sounded really dumb but she seemed to accept it.

“Thank goodness you weren’t hurt. What were you doing there?” Dad sounded curious now he knew I was OK.

“Erm, trying to stop them,” that sounded stupider.

“And who was the handsome man darling?” Trust Mum to pick up on that. I rolled my eyes and gritted my teeth.

  “Elf, Mum.”

“Well he looks lovely, are you seeing him?”

“He’s an elf Mum! And no, we were just…together when the dragon came out.” That sounded like an innuendo. There was a pause.

“Well we want to see you, we’re coming to Cardiff.”

I grimaced, I loved my parents but they were always excited by the big city and Mum would force me to go shopping. I still hadn’t told her about the red coat. “No, please. I’ll come and see you, I need a break.”

“You always did work too hard love. Come as soon as you can or we’ll come and see you,” Dad hung up on that threat.

I groaned. I felt like a teenager instead of a thirty something. How could Mum think I was with an elf? That brought my thoughts back to Lorandir. I needed to pull myself together. It was only a kiss. The best kiss of my life, I admitted to myself. With an elf who I had instinctively disliked when I first met him. And who was gone anyway. We hadn’t even managed to stop a dragon being woken up, so it didn’t matter. It wasn’t like I’d ever see him again.
