“A ride.” She smiled and sidled over to him. She glided her palm down his stomach and over his cock. “I’d love to.”
He groaned. “Not that kind of ride, honeybear, unfortunately. I meant on my bike.”
“Really? A ride. That almost makes up for not having sex with you.” She laughed.
“Put on some jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. I have a jacket and a helmet for you. You can bring your purse, and we’ll put it in one of the hard saddlebags.” Maddox smiled.
“Why don’t you go get the jacket, and I’ll change? If you stay here, I might be tempted to attack you.” She patted his chest.
“How are you today? How’s your wrist?” He grasped her hand.
She scowled. “I’m fine. I’m only wearing the brace because the doctor and my job say I have to. Well, you three, too. Other than not being cleared to change forms right now because the weight of a bear might be too much for a freshly healed break, I’m fine. You three have babied me for weeks.”
“And we’ll baby you more, until we’re sure you’re completely whole.” Maddox smiled. “Hurry, or I’ll have to come in here and supervise.”
He walked out and went to go grab jackets for both of them. He’d bought her a thick leather jacket of her own shortly after their discussion in his shop. The thought of riding with her had filled his mind.
He pulled the two jackets from the closet and waited in the hall for her. Patience. He took a deep breath. If he went back there, he didn’t know if he’d be able to resist taking those clothes off instead of helping her put them on. He clenched his fists. Soon, they’d be on the way.
“Should we text Micah or Gable that we’re going for a ride?” She strolled down the hallway.
“I did while I was waiting for you.” He held out her jacket for her. “They know we’ll be gone when they come back.”
“Good. I wouldn’t want them to worry.” She took the jacket and put it on.
“Zip it up. I know it’s not cold, but it won’t do you any good unzipped.” He zipped his own jacket.
“Okay. Where are we going?” She pulled the zipper up.
“A ride along some beautiful roads.” He lifted his hand.
“Sounds nice. Will we be out for dinner or back to eat with Micah and Gable?” She slid her palm in his.
“How about we think about that when we get on the road?” Maddox tugged her out of the house, pausing only to lock the door.
He led her out to the motorcycle and mounted. He held the motorcycle steady as she climbed on behind him. He handed her a helmet and then put on his own. She wrapped her arms around him, and she leaned against him. Warmth curled through him as her grip firmed. He sighed. So good.
Hopefully, she enjoyed this enough that she wouldn’t ask questions until they were almost there, but at least on the road, she couldn’t push for more answers. It was the one reason he hadn’t brought home miked helmets. She’d eventually notice him evading giving her straight answers. Dixie wasn’t stupid.
He started slowly, letting her get accustomed to riding. Her arms tightened around his waist, and her breasts pressed against his back. Damn, he should have done this ages ago.
He guided the bike out of town and onto a scenic road. They’d expect him in thirty minutes to an hour. He’d have to take the roundabout way to keep her from being suspicious that anything was planned. If he went straight to the cabin, they’d be there in twenty minutes tops.
Along the way, he drove past trees and down back roads. Did she notice he was taking extra turns and looping around in circles near town? Hopefully, she put it off to him wanting to savor a little extra time with her. Which was true in more ways than the immediate. They were safe and could build their future with Dixie.
He finally turned onto a dirt road and guided the bike up to a cabin. Log construction and surrounded by forest, it offered the solitude they wanted. Not opulent, but then they might not leave that big bed this weekend.
He pulled to a stop in front of it. No other vehicles sat in front of it to clue her in. Good, they’d remembered to keep the SUV out of sight. She wouldn’t know Micah and Gable were here, yet.
“What are we doing here? I thought you were taking me on a scenic drive. Most of what we’ve passed was pretty, but this isn’t what I expected.” She swung her leg off the bike and stood beside it.
“What? You don’t think it’s beautiful?” He nudged down the kickstand and got off.
“Oh, it’s beautiful, but it’s kind of mean to bring someone to a place surrounded by forest when they can’t change.” She held up her hand with the black brace. “Kinda like teasing a child with candy and eating it in front of them.”
“I don’t think you’ll miss changing today. Now, come on. Let’s go walk a little.” He grasped her hand and tugged her along the rock path up to the house.
“Did you rent this cabin? Because I can smell a wood fire and food.” She pulled back.
He laughed. A good sign that Micah and Gable had things ready. “So many questions. Come on.”
He climbed the steps and turned and lifted her onto the porch. She rolled her eyes, but strolled along beside him to the door.
“You know I don’t have clothes if you’re planning an overnight stay.” She glanced over at him.
He dug the key from his pocket. They had everything she’d want already here. “You won’t need them.”
He unlocked the door and ushered her inside. She stopped two steps into the house. White and red rose petals littered the floor from the door to the table. Maddox grinned. Nice touch. They hadn’t said anything about rose petals.
“Oh, my.” She bit her lip. “Where are they?”
“We’re here, honeybear.” Micah walked out of the back. “Are you surprised?”
“Yes. I didn’t expect this.” She strode over and hugged him and then Gable.
“Come on, Dixie. You and Maddox are just in time for dinner.” Gable curled an arm around her and led her to the table.
“I’m definitely hungry. Something smells delicious.” She took a seat at the table.
Maddox lifted a brow and stared at Micah. Did they get everything set? Micah raised a thumb before following them. Maddox exhaled. Everything was in place.
“Micah grilled us steaks, and we have baked potatoes as well as some salad.” Gable strode into the kitchen and returned with a platter of steaks. “And for dessert, your very favorite dessert.
Maddox trailed in and found the bowl of salad. He carried it out as Gable and Micah returned to the kitchen. His mouth watered from the beefy aroma of the steak. Micah grabbed the platter of baked potatoes and condiments. Gable pulled a bottle of wine out of the refrigerator.
They carried it all to the table.
“Just relax back. We’ll serve you.” Micah sat the platter down.
“You don’t have to…I can help.” She bit her lip.
“Not tonight.” Maddox patted her arm and sat down across from her. He’d had her pressed to his back the entire ride here. The others should have some time near her.
She nodded. Micah dished up her food. Gable poured wine into her glass. She smiled and relaxed. Micah and Gable took their seats and dished up their own food.
“When did you three plan this?” She glanced around the table, loading sour cream, butter, and cheese on her potato.
“Over a couple days when we had a few moments. We knew we wanted to do something special for you.” Micah reached over, and he stroked her arm.
“This is special and romantic. You may have set yourself a challenge on some of our anniversaries.” She sipped at the red wine.
“Some of them?” Gable tilted his head.
“You don’t think that I’ll let you have all the fun, do you? I’ll enjoy surprising you on occasion, too.” Dixie grinned.
“We’ll look forward to that.” Micah squeezed her hand. “Eat up. We have big plans for tonight.”
They ate for a while, chatting about their jobs. Maddox delighted in
the time. The big question was coming up. Finally, she put down her fork and sipped at her wine.
Gable reached into his pocket and pulled out a small blue box. He put it in front of her. She glanced down at the box, her mouth open.
“What is this?” She picked up the box and opened it.
“That’s a ring, honeybear.” Micah rose and dropped to his knees beside her chair.
Maddox rose and moved up beside her. He knelt. “We’ve wanted you ever since we caught your scent. As we learned more about you, our love for you has grown. Now, we want to make it formal. Would you mate with us? We want all our friends and family to be there to celebrate the day with us.”
“You made a place in my heart, honeybear. I love you.” Micah stroked her knee.
“If you’d like a wedding, we’d love to have that with you, too.” Gable dropped down on her other side. “There’s no way I can live without you. I love you.”
She smiled and touched each of them. “Yes! I love you, too.”
She dropped to her knees and threw her arms wide. Tears streamed down her face.
Micah lifted her to her feet. “To the mating ceremony and a wedding? Or just the mating ceremony.”
“How about we start with a mating ceremony and see what fits for us? I haven’t thought a lot about a wedding. It’s not something that’s common for a whyr. In the meantime, I’m sure that this cabin has a bedroom. How about we try it out? We’ll leave the dessert for when we come up for air.”
