The song was coming to an end now, much quicker than Ash thought it would. It seemed the live version was a lot shorter than the album version. Still, one glance at Gloria was enough to convince her that it had been long enough to be effective. She sat there beaming, taking in the last few notes, then shot out of her chair, dropping Ash’s hand in the process, to join in the raucous applause.
When she finally had eyes for Ash again, Gloria said, “That was one of the best moments of my life.”
Ash pulled her close. “I aim to please,” she half-shouted into Gloria’s ear.
“I didn’t really think I could love you more, but I seem to have reached a whole new level of Ash-fondness.”
“Good to know what it takes.” Ash kissed Gloria on the cheek. “That’s excellent information to have.” She might have been the one to give Gloria a surprise gift, but the pleasure was all hers. To see Gloria so lit up, so perfectly pleased and, granted, so utterly infatuated with her, was the biggest gift anyone could ever give Ash. “Apparently my ex-wife’s here as well,” she said.
“How does that make you feel?” Gloria briefly furrowed her brow.
Ash shrugged. “I’m here with you,” she said. “I don’t have any room left inside me for any feelings of resentment or hurt towards Charlotte.”
Gloria curved her arm around Ash’s shoulders and pulled her close. Ash felt her lips curl into a smile against the skin of her cheek. “The power of lo-o-ove,” Gloria sang into her ear, going high and extremely tone-deaf on the last note.
“It’s also good to know that you still can’t sing to save your life.” Ash wrapped Gloria into a full body hug, ignoring Lewis’s wolf whistles and not caring that they were standing in the middle of a crowded arena. When she curled her arms around Gloria, and she could do that now no matter where they were, it always felt like it was just the two of them in the whole wide world.
