by Edmond Thiaudière

The anatomist Franz Josef Gall (1758-1828) remains famous as the pioneer of what is now usually known as phrenology.

On 19th century phrenological charts, area 1 is generally labeled “amativeness,” allegedly corresponding to the mental faculty of physical amour.

This is slightly misleading; Gall’s area twelve corresponds to “locality”—i.e., the perception of the location of surrounding objects, not to a desire to travel.

“Now is the time for drinking,” from one of Horace’s Odes.

The Jansenist Pierre Nicole (1625-1695); the essay cited is the most famous in Essais de morale (1671).

The painter cited is Daniel Crespi 1598-1630).

“Hérodiade receiving the head of John the Baptist” (c.1530) by Bernardino Luini (c.1480-1532) is in the Uffizi Gallery, but the Louvre has another study of the same subject, in which the character is given the more usual name of Salome.

The full line from Horace’s Ars Poetica translates as “The beautiful woman ends in a fish’s tail.”

An obscure French conjuror by the name of Robin demonstrated the illusion better known as “Pepper’s ghost,” which employs a mirror, during the 1870s, as reported in Chambers’ Journal.

The quote is from Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. The line translates as “It is pleasant [to watch from the shore] in a great sea [stirred by the wind]….”

The repeated line is improvised, but the “O gué” would have indicated to a contemporary reader that they were being sung to the rhythm of the chorus of a popular children’s song “Si le roi m’avait donné Paris.”

Author’s note: “Although the marquise does not say so, it is evident that the property in La Puisaye cannot have belonged entirely to her father but must have been owned jointly with her mother, who, in order to avoid dividing it between herself and her ward, must have obtained a judgment of sale from the tribunal.”

Charles-Michel de l’Épée (1712-1789) developed the first sign language for the use of the deaf, which he taught in the Institution Nationale des Sourd-Muets À Paris, which he founded and continued after his death.

Albert von Haller and Jerome Gaubius were both renowned eighteenth-century physicians ad a physician named Stoll was one of the popularizers of homeopathy in the same period; the other names are elusive.

In Alfred de Vigny’s poem, a classic of French Romanticism, Éloa is a female angel who falls in love with handsome male angel, not realizing that he is about to start a war in heaven and be damned, drawing her to damnation with him in spite of her innocence.

Mrs. Little says the italicized phrase in English, which leads the narrator to misunderstand, the French verb blesser meaning to wound.

This dialect term, with translates literally as “blood-dead,” has no exact English translation, although the phrase “cold-blooded” is a near equivalent, when used to refers to a person unusually devoid of emotion.

A British volunteer force known as the Auxiliary Legion came to San Sebastian to support a contingent of the French Foreign Legion during the First Carlist War of 1833-37, in which France and England were both lending rather half-hearted support to Queen Isabella; about a quarter of their number were killed in the course of a long and bitter struggle to prevent the Carlists taking the city

Louis-Emmanuel Rey’s defense of San Sebastian during the Napoleonic Wars was ultimately defeated, but became legendary for its tenacity and ingenuity.

The Spanish warrior called “El Cid” by the Moors (Rodrigo Diaz, 1040-1099) and his wife Jimena (Chimène in French) obtained a particular significance in France because to Pierre Corneille’s play Le Cid (1636), which was advertized, accurately as a “tragicomedy,” and thus started and argument about generic propriety that raged for decades.

Enrique II reigned in Castile from 1390-1406. The famous automaton of Burgos cathedral known as Papamoscas is featured in numerous literary works, including one by Victor Hugo. It can easily be viewed nowadays on YouTube.

Pierre Corneille also wrote Horace (1640), based on Livy’s account of the conflict between the Horatii and the Curiati, in which Camille [Camilla], the sister of Horace [Horatius] and the fiancée of Curiace [Curiatus], gets caught in the middle

José Zorrilla (1817-1893) was a leading figure in the Spanish Romantic Movement. Cantos de Irovador was pushing in 1841 and the “religioso-fantastico drama” Don Juan Tenorio in 1844. The later became the longest-running drama in Spain, but he had sold the rights outright and he began published scathing criticisms of the play in the hope of killing it off so that he could write a new version, but in vain.

“Necessity knows no law”—a Spanish proverb.

The fresco in question is now generally assumed to be the work of Buonamico Buffalmacco rather than Orcagna.

The Bishop of Agen from 1874-1884, during which interval the present story appears to be set, was Jean-Emile Fonteneau.

The Locanda delle Belle Arti in Orvieto was in the Palazzo Ottaviani. It is no longer a guest-house.

“If the tea had been for your excellency, he would only have paid two francs fifty, but for the English…!”

“For the love of God, Madame, a poor little coin!”

“Get away…you won’t be given anything.”

A strait-jacket—the pun does not translate.

“Is she still on her feet?”

“That’s all right, that’s all right, we’ll see, we’ll see.”

“Did your friend love his wife very much?”
