But my black beauty rears up, and before I know it, Hudson has twirled the rope over her head and lassoed her in. She’s dancing in the brush, but he soothes her, fearlessly stepping up to her and coaxing her to let him whisper something in her ear.
A few minutes later, he has her walking beside him back to the path.
“Milly!” I say, tears welling up in my eyes. I want to stand up and hug her, and the man who just saved her. “Thank you, Hudson. I owe you one.”
He pats Milly’s neck and smiles. “No, it’s my pleasure to help out.” He hands the reins to his buddy then and says, “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do. Roger and I came in my pickup truck, so—”
“Wait a minute,” Penny steps forward. “Let me just tell you something. My friend needs medical attention. I think her ankle’s just sprained, but it should be x-rayed to make sure it’s not broken.”
“Well, I think that’s a mighty fine idea, and that’s why I propose that I take her right into town to the hospital after carrying her up the hill.” Hudson turns to me. “Do you mind if I do that, and if my buddy rides your horse out of the canyon?”
“I would really appreciate that,” I reply. If anything had happened to Milly as a result of my coming here today, I’d never have forgiven myself. I’m so grateful that Hudson and his friend showed up, I have to let him know that. “And I’m not going to let my daddy give you any trouble for helping me, either.”
“That’s an awful sweet thought, but we’ll just wait and see what your daddy thinks of all this himself,” Hudson answers. And with that, he lifts me into his arms.
His body feels hot, and we are both sweaty with the sunlight beaming down upon us. Being in his arms feels like some sort of dangerous miracle—all I can think is that he is the stranger who has lived on the ranch next door to our ranch all these years. I never was allowed to meet him or his family before, and now here he is pressing me against his strong and powerful chest. Still, I’m surprised he can lift me so easily—I’m probably a half a foot shorter than him, but I’m not at all a frail little thing. “Just let me know if you need to rest,” I insist.
But he gives me a serene look and responds, “I will not rest until you are safe and ready to ride your Milly across the land again.”
A feeling of bliss washes over me. I really think the pain has made me a little delirious, or it’s this man’s smell of leather and cedar that gives me a feeling that nothing could ever hurt me again. I know he’s a Texan through and through, but I still have this feeling I’m floating on a distant sea, climbing a treacherous mountainside, flying through clouds far above the earth. My daddy always said I was a starry-eyed dreamer. But I wonder if my dreams are coming true.
