“Kendra.” Rocco’s soft voice cut through her memories. She blinked a few times to find him standing before her. She glanced up at him as he pulled her to him.
“You okay?” he asked. She nodded against his chest.
“I can’t believe it’s really you,” Free whispered, standing next to them. Kendra turned to her to see a trail of tears on alpha’s mate’s face. Free held her arms open and Kendra flew into them, unable to hold back the cry that escaped. These were her parents’ friends. Free squeezed her tight as her body shuddered.
“Rocco, your mother and I never told you, but we knew that the Sexton’s daughter was to be you’re mate when you all were children. We had agreed on an arranged mating. When Lou and Heidi were killed and their daughter disappeared, there was nothing we could do. So we figured you would find another mate once you were grown,” Anders said.
Kendra pulled back and wiped her face with the sleeve of her sweater.
“What?” she gasped, her eyes flying to Rocco’s.
“That explains why neither of you have ever mated. Your bears knew the other existed. You said it yourself that you came and did your studies here at the university, and now you’re here again. You were drawn to Norwich because your mate is here.” Free smiled through her tears.
Kendra glanced at Rocco, and knew that Free spoke the truth. Something always seemed to draw her to this town, and now she knew why.
“I knew from the moment I smelled your scent at the party that you were my mate,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She smiled, knowing that him being attracted to her scent was a compliment. “How about it? Looks like we were destined to be together. Mate with me.”
She sucked in a quick breath at his words. Her eyes searched his, and she saw the offer was genuine. Her best friend’s gift to her had blossomed into so much more. She would have to thank her for the ticket to the party that led to meeting Rocco. A day of lovemaking morphed into a forever love with the proposal of mating forever. It was the gift that would just keep on giving.
“It was the same for me. I was always told the trauma of my parents’ death was the reason why my bear wouldn’t come forward. I always knew deep down something worthy of my bear coming to the forefront would release her. I think that was you. She saw you and knew that she wanted you. She identified you as our mate, and I would be happy to be your mate forever.” Kendra laughed as Rocco scooped her up into his arms. She wrapped her arms around him and knew that she would never let him go.
