“Sounds like someone else I know,” Savage drawled wryly. “You seem excited.”
“I'm not excited,” she denied. “It's just... we spent how long cooped up with him? Being his bitches? And now he's here. He's here and he's going to have to do as he's told and oh my god, you totally outrank him here.” She grinned so wide her face almost split in two. “Tell me you're going to spank him when he's naughty.”
Savage laughed. “I don't think so, Zora. I think you and I are both going to mind our own business. Do you think you can manage that? Or are you going to need a reminder?” His large, hard hand slid over her hip and cupped her bottom.
“I don't need reminders,” she said, squirming against his hand as she stood on tippy toes to nip kiss his lower lip.
“Now that's where you're definitely wrong,” he disagreed with a light slap to her backside. “You need daily reminders, my girl.”
“What if he attacks us? What if he's just managed to finagle his way out of prison to get us back?”
“I doubt it, Zora,” Savage said. “He knows damn well what will happen if he puts so much as a toe wrong. And he'll have just as many people keeping an eye on him as there are keeping eyes on you.”
“Oh right,” Zora said. “All the people who were completely surprised when I managed to get to Utah?”
“You came to Utah because you wanted to be with me. Love is a much more powerful motivator than hate. And Tex loves himself. He knows he's only ever one slip up away from prison, and unlike you, he's not the sort to just curl up and go to sleep.”
“Hey,” Zora scowled. “Is that a dig at me?”
“I'm just saying,” Savage said. “You didn't fight nearly so hard to get out of Tex's cell as you did to get out of here.
“Because I knew you would save me from his cell,” she said, her eyes clear with honesty. “You always do.”
“That's right, Matthews.” He smiled down at her and pressed another kiss to her lips. “So don't you worry about Tex or anyone else.”
“Okay,” she agreed. “I won't.”
She sat on the back of the truck and chatted away whilst Savage continued working on the engine. It was a peaceful afternoon and for a sweet hour she really felt as though she and he were just an ordinary couple in an ordinary neighborhood. It was perfect.
Then she saw something. Someone, really. “Is that... Anja?”
Savage glanced over, smiled and waved hello. “She probably has another date with Holt.”
“So this is how it ends, huh?” Zora hopped off the back of the truck and walked around to nudge Savage. “You and me getting hitched, Tex going good and Anja dating a shrink?”
“Seems fitting, don't you think?”
“Yeah,” she agreed as he slipped his arms around her waist and lowered his head in a precursor to one of his molten kisses. “It all fits perfectly – like a ball of snakes in a handbag, or a shiver of sharks in a swimming pool. Anja's about to go into a building containing a man who tried to kill her. What's going to happen when she walks into Martin Holt's office and sees Tex there? What the hell is Holt thinking?”
Savage's lips came down on hers passionately as he claimed her in a kiss that left her feeling tingly and just a little bit weak.
“Quit worrying, Matthews,” he said, brushing her hair back from her face. “They're not our problem. I'm off-duty and you've never really been on-duty.”
No sooner had he spoken than a siren began blaring. Dozens of men began running towards the data center, hands on their holsters as their boots pounded across the pavement. There was shouting and yelling, and urgency was in the air.
'ATTENTION!' The warning system blared. 'ALL ACTIVE DUTY PERSONNEL TO THE DATA CENTER'
“Looks like there's been some kind of security breach,” Zora noted mildly. “I wonder if it's related... Do you think Anja is killing Tex?”
'ATTENTION!'
Savage moved between her legs and wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing hot kisses to her neck. “I told you, Zora,” he said in between kisses. “It's not our problem.”
'ATTENTION!'
Gunshots echoed in the distance and the wailing of sirens became a cacophony as Savage lifted Zora off the hood of his truck and carried her inside what was soon to be their marital home. It was true that their freedoms had been curtailed. They were not free to ride the rails, or to eke out livings as pizza delivery specialists, but they were free to live, love and work within the system that contained them. And once in a while, that meant ignoring the chaos that would always be present in their lives for five minutes, and making sweet, hot, tender love.
'ATTENTION!'
There was a place for them, a place outside of time and outside of space. A place separate from the cares of the world and far away from their personal petty disagreements and worries. It was the place of their love, an untouchable sanctum where they were wholly and entirely free. As Zora wrapped her legs around his waist, she sighed with happiness. She'd finally found the liberty she'd spent her life seeking, and she'd found it in the arms of her very own Savage.
