“You heard what he said, right? Nine states. It will be hell out there.”
Miles nodded looking toward the early stages of devastation, buildings on fire, smoke rising and drifting across the desert like a curtain of black death. His mind was held captive by thoughts of Jenna, Donnie, his son, Mikey, and all that this meant. “If you want to stay I will understand, but I need to leave. I need to stop this.”
“Stop? But that message made no sense.” Abe added.
“To you, to the military. I think I know where to look. So it’s up to you all. Stay or come with me.”
“Stay? There’s nothing left to stay for,” Wayne said getting in the rear.
One by one the others climbed inside ready to leave, conversation swirling, anxiety rising. Hal was the last to board. He eyed Miles with an unforgiving look that made him feel the weight of his daughter’s demise.
Miles felt his pain, especially with the loss of Jenna, but he wasn’t responsible for this but he could see how anyone watching that video would think otherwise.
He jammed the gearstick into drive, adjusted his mirrors and they peeled away searching for answers, searching for a cure, clinging to the only thing they had left — one another.
