“I see,” Dave fell silent.
Valentinian brought power to the collective and his ship poised, ever so briefly before she leapt into the night sky above Tartarus City.
“And?” Dave prompted again into the silence.
“If I don’t ever ask the wrong questions, then when the White Hats eventually put me under a truth serum later, I can’t tell them anything about you,” Valentinian said, almost angry at himself. “So don’t tell me anything more than I already know, okay?”
Like how you managed to kill the best-protected man in the galaxy.
Valentinian no longer doubted that Dave Hall was deadly enough to have done the job. Nash and his friends had been about as dangerous as newborn kittens.
“Oh,” Dave finally said, so apparently he understood. “Gotcha.”
Valentinian nodded gratefully at the man as the ship accelerated into the night sky.
“So now what?” Dave finally asked as they got to a high altitude.
Valentinian wondered where his own words had gone, but he could answer a direct question, even if he couldn’t formulate any better response ahead of time.
“So now I think it would be better if we were maybe beyond the immediate, legal reach of the White Hats for a while,” Valentinian said, finally looking at his first mate directly. “They’re not ever going to stop looking for you, are they?”
Dave surprised him by shrugging.
“Kyriaki could have taken me in,” he said simply. “But she let me, us, go. Maybe she’ll cover things up enough. We’re just a pair of spacers that got in over our heads, right?”
Valentinian laughed and felt the knot between his shoulder blades finally loosen.
“Over our heads, yeah,” he said.
He understood that feeling.
But Dave Hall had chosen to come and rescue him when he could have just disappeared into the night. That made twice he owed the man.
This would pay back one of them, getting out to at least Laurentia for a time, if not all the way into Wildspace.
Maybe the White Hats would forget about them.
And cows might discover FTL.
